Confusing

I agree with the below reviewer. The author is clearly intelligent; however, this book is written in a confusing fashion for beginners, even for the seemingly simplest of concepts (i.e. probability). The random interjections of graphs before concepts are fully explained makes for a very disjointed experience. I find myself turning to Google and random examples on the internet for elucidation, at which point the concepts seem much less intimidating/complicated than as presented in the book. After I solidly understand the concepts, the book description then makes much more sense! It's just not that initially accessible to beginners (as would be implied by the description "basic" in the title). A good reference, though.

Great Book, and Great Gift!

Great book for beginners. I buy these to give to people who have given no thought as to how to prepare for their future...and there are a lot of these. I was one of them, and thankfully I woke up in time, so I have made it a point to try to urge young people to give some thought to their financial future. This book is very accessible to someone who "hasn't got a clue." Several people I know began saving and investing as a result of reading the copy I gave them, and it is going to make a world of difference to them when they reach retirement age. So if you are one of the people "without a clue," this is the book for you.

Great introduction.

This did a good job of demystifying a lot of investing concepts. Having done some additional reading since, I can say that this was a very solid introduction and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to start here as opposed to having to wade through the dregs of the internet trying to find clear, concise information.

intelligently written..

If you're starting out on investing, this book is a very-much appreciated start and this is coming from a fellow newbie. I really appreciated the addressing of the facts from fiction on the consumer economics behind the investment sector. The sector that monitors sectors. I believe this book sets the tone of the proper perspective one should have before investing.

The book establishes a baseline and inserts itself right in the middle of most americans, investment instruments for wealth and financial advisers. I don't believe any favors were made by writing this book except to be honest with the readers. Having just recently started investing as I approach 40 I've become more of an open airwave antenna picking up all the market news and signals. We have input sensors on 16 hours a day and we need to be cognizant of 'decision triggers'. The author associates the same principles to investing and tactfully shows the alternate view. The polite presentation of the views allow room for the investigative reader to explorer riskier areas (stocks). The tech stocks these days seem to be a lighthouse (not like the light bulb on the cover, but I'm in Tech... can't.. reeezist).

The author is a CPA as clearly noted on the cover. That is, the letter designation for passing the much harder Series test. Ok, so I didn't mention the contents of the book. Hey, it's a "100 pages or less" and the man deserves his keep.

I bought this book for a class, buts its actually an easy read and interesting.
It was a reasonable price, but in retrospect someone could buy the test bank for the same price so it all depends on if the person wants to learn the material or simply get "through" the class.

Needs deeper explanations for a textbook

I had to purchase this book for a class on business networks. The book does a horrible job of explaining the content, and it is almost universal in my class that students feel that way. There are two that feel it is fine, but they already work in the networking field and are just formalizing some education.

This is not to say it has worthless content, it just doesn't fully develop or explain a fair amount of the content, it stays very cursory.

That it has these types of issues and is in it's 9th edition speaks volumes about the college book market. The book cost $130 and should really sell for no more than $15.

Not a fan!

If I could give this book ZERO stars, I would. This book is awful to read! It feels incomplete like the author expects that you're learning the information from somewhere else and they are just there to refresh your memory. One of the End-Of-Chapter Questions in Chapter 6 began with: "The following matters were not addressed specifically in the text." Who writes a book to teach and puts a question like that in the End-Of-Chapter "refresher" questions?! I got more of a "frustrated" feeling than a "refreshed" one.

I took this course (Data Communications) in Spring 2015 and the instructor asked the students to comment on the course and book. Here are some of the comments that were written about the book:
"...poorly written and not a very good learning tool. How exactly are you supposed to learn when the author talks to you as if you already know the topic?"
"...my impression of the book was suboptimal."

Got this book from Chegg for my semester

Pretty terrible at explaining anything network related. Only thing I really understood from it was the OSI model. Other than that moving onto networking with wireless, wans and lans it was all over the place explaining terms I couldn't even understand. Most of my class felt the same way because no one was doing well taking the exams for it. The figures to show how networking works were pretty much useless as I was pretty lost looking at these pictures.

The first part of the book is a self-contained presentation of the basic combinatorics of Young tableaux, including the remarkable constructions of "bumping" and "sliding", and several interesting correspondences. In Part II the author uses these results to study representations with geometry on Grassmannians and flag manifolds, including their Schubert subvarieties, and the related Schubert polynomials. Much of this material has never before appeared in book form. There are numerous exercises throughout, with hints and answers provided. Researchers in representation theory and algebraic geometry as well as in combinatorics will find this book interesting and useful, while students will find the intuitive presentation easy to follow.
