About the Author
John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. He attended Harrow and trained as a barrister at New College, Oxford. Although called to the bar in 1890, rather than practise law, Galsworthy travelled extensively and began to write.

It was as a playwright Galsworthy had his first success. His playslike his most famous work, the series of novels comprising The Forsyte Sagadealt primarily with class and the social issues of the day, and he was especially harsh on the class from which he himself came.

Ironic Insight

I didn't like the first book of the trilogy. I warmed to the second. I loved the intervening shorts. But it's not until I finish the final installment in the trilogy that I really understand and appreciate what Galsworthy was doing here. His treatise on the end of the Victorian age is a deeply thoughtful, ironic, and ultimately very moving one. Glad I stuck with it.

Grade 6-9 - Essentially a graphic novel without the graphics, this book (the first of five) should have broad appeal to readers who love computer games and Japanese anime. As the story begins, five orphans, being raised as foster brothers and Buddhist monks in 17th-century China, are hiding in a large water jar as imperial forces, led by their renegade older brother, Ying, attack and slaughter their temple's residents. Grandmaster has given the boys animal names and has trained each of them in a martial-arts style related to his titular animal's strengths. He intends the five to escape, even if everyone else dies. Fu - the "tiger" - is this book's main character; in addition to remaining free, he is determined to reclaim the valuable ancient training scrolls that Ying has taken from the temple. Fu finds friends in unexpected places and learns to control the impulses he has fought against all of his life. Teens are likely to warm to the implicit theme that each person has a particular destiny, an inborn sense of identity that must be brought to light. While quite a page-turner, employing slapstick humor from time to time in true manga style, Tiger is nonetheless an adventure story and not a more serious work of finding one's self and one's place in the world. As the book begins, the boys are hidden in a water barrel during a raid on their temple. The emperor's army, under the command of their former brother, Ying, the Eagle, is out to destroy the Cangzhen Monastery, kill the grandmaster, and steal the sacred scrolls. Impetuous Fu rescues the scrolls, but his own rash act leads to imprisonment in a remote village. Although set in 1650 China, this is a kung fu novel, not historical fiction, and despite the grandmaster's peace-seeking Buddhist philosophy, Tiger is not for the squeamish, as Ying is a terrifying villain and "bloodstained flesh dangles" during violent battles. Characters are virtuous or evil, but the slam-bang, pedal-to-the-metal adventure stands a good chance of luring kids away from video games; they will definitely line up for the forthcoming sequel. Fantastic Debut

I bought TIGER for my eight-year-old son, and he absolutely loved it. So far, his reading tastes have included the Bionicle books, Lemony Snicket's novels, Magic Tree House adventures, and the old Boxcar Children series, but in the Five Ancestors, he's found a new favorite. This was the first book my son read from cover to cover, on his own, in the space of eight hours. He was so absorbed in reading TIGER that he barely wanted to stop for food or bathroom breaks. We're so excited to have discovered Jeff Stone!

An Action Packed Kung Fu Adventure

Cangzhen Temple is one of the most renowned temples in China and home to five unique teens. Each is the master of a particular style of Kung Fu and their skills are put to the test when their Temple is destroyed by Ying, a former student of the temple. This is the first of a planned five book series and follows Fu, master of the tiger style of Kung Fu, as he attempts to find a way to defeat Ying and get the 5 scrolls of ancient Kung Fu wisdom that Ying now has. Fu is a ferocious fighter and has an equally volcanic temper. The action starts quickly, grabbing the read from page one, and runs throughout this book. Readers will be hard-pressed not to want to immediately pick-up Monkey the second book in the series.

Whew! Exciting!

Tiger, Jeff Stone's children's adventure story, is the first of a series about five young warrior monks in 17th century China.

The cover has a powerful illustration and raised lettering of the Chinese characters for tiger. It's a "wow" book from the cover to the too-quick ending.

Author Stone paints some amazingly clear pictures of these young monks and their kung fu fighting. I felt like I was in the midst of every fight, and in every perilous predicament.

Fu, also known as Tiger, is 12 years old, like his four monk brothers. They survive an attack on their secret temple by an evil 16-year-old monk. When Tiger and the other young monks realize that everyone has been massacred, they know they must hunt down and regain possession of the temple's scrolls. Why? The scrolls contained special kung fu fighting techniques only known to those monks.

Each monk takes on the persona of his corresponding animal, and future books in the series will be called Crane, Monkey, Dragon and Snake. Young readers will enjoy the energetic fight scenes, the young monk's cunning, and most of all, their commitment to each other and their grandmaster.

Children who are involved in the martial arts will immediately become fans and will love every moment in this page-turning book. I can't wait for the next one due in September 2005.

Warning from this reviewer: It's been eons since I've read to a child, or been involved in their video games, so I don't know what level of violence is acceptable. I was a bit taken aback by the graphic violence in the book. It is geared to 8-to-12-year olds but I think it should be 10-12.

This book follows Dalton Henson through college, a year of teaching physical education and coaching athletics at a junior high school, a summer as a camp counselor, two years in the U.S. Army—including a year in Vietnam—and the year after he is discharged from the Army, as he lives in a low-grade motel room in Tampa, writing a novel and interacting with a variety of motel staff and guests,

A tale of anxiety, loneliness, repression and stunted emotional growth. The friendly stranger of this story is a time bomb, for himself and for children he will meet in future. Heartbreaking for all. Recommended to those who know a pedophile and want to understand.

I started this novel with the idea I would receive some insight into the mind of a sexual pervert. The book was a rambling story about nothing more than the uninteresting life of a very confused young man. I do not recommend you read it. By the way, I first became aware of this book in Readers Digest. It sounded interesting. It was not.

No character development. No plot. No conflict resolution. Chronological diary with repetitive entries. Main character had many neuroses totally unrelated to his main problem of pedophilia, such as phobias and social anxiety and thinking based on fantasy.

Smart woman + SEAL + heat = a winner for me

A solid 4.5 stars for me. Knight's SEALs contains the perfect recipe of strong women (3 of 'em!), handsome alpha SEALs, a nice dose of steam, and a bit of intrigue. This book isn't deep but it is good.

Lisa and Sam had a brief relationship but she ended it for altruistic reasons five years ago. Fast forward to present day and they find themselves working together on a mission. Sam is an active duty SEAL, Lisa is a former Naval Intelligence Officer and their mission is under the command of Lisa's dad, Jameson Knight who happens to be Sam's former commander. Their rescue mission takes them from DC to San Diego where Lisa and Sam work "thisclosely" together at a high end resort to save a friend/colleague. While playing husband and wife on an anniversary vacation, they try to avoid going down memory lane and ultimately realize that they can't go back but they can move forward. I liked both lead characters and enjoyed them finding each other again. The only thing I found a bit hokey were references to a mythical castle. For a man like Jameson, I would have expected different references. That said, there's nothing wrong with a well read man.

This is a quick, fun and fast-paced read. It's also my first book by Ms. Michael's and is so good that it won't be my last.

I recommend reading this Kindle World Crossover Novella by Donna Michaels. Sam Gentry is a Navy SEAL. Leader of one of the most elite SEAL teams in the Navy. He is approached by former teammates to enter the private sector as a member of GAPS, a private security firm. He also receives a request from his former CO to assist in a mission his company is heading. Sam owes his life to his former CO, Jameson Knight now CIA Special Operations Groups leader, so he agrees before he is read into the mission. Once he gains full knowledge of the mission, which includes posing as husband and wife with a woman he had been seriously involved with 5 years ago, Knight's daughter, he prays all of his training as a SEAL will help him be successful. Will Sam be able to stay professional? This type of restraint training had never been given by the Navy. Will he give into the feelings he buried long ago? Will he break the "you don't mess with family" code? Will he be able to complete the mission when things heat up? This is a quick and easy read. Who can resist a SEAL, undercover operations, cold showers, the Columbian Cartel, the Russian Mafia, guns, and hot tubs?

Great start to a new series!!

Great start to a new series. Knight's SEAL kicks off the start of Dangerous Curve which in a twist is about 5 dangerous women.

A former SEAL team leader now runs his own CIA special op company called The Knight Agency. When its found out that Naval Intelligence Officer Lt. Nicole Locke is being kept prisoner by a cartel leader he enlist his daughter Elisabeth Knight who works for him now and used to be a NIO and Navy SEAL Sam Gentry who used to be under his command to go in undercover as a married couple.

Problem is he doesnt know what Sam and Lisa used to be an item 5 years ago until Sam found out who her father was and broke things off. So not only do they have to deal with going undercover to rescue Nicole and try and take the cartel leader alive but they also have to deal with their unresolved feelings while on the op.

This looks to be a great series and I cannot wait for the next book.

I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously

Although the author is a fluid writer, this book was certainly not what I hoped for. I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously, and have gotten to know a few fine countertenors. When I saw this book listed, and its subject, I thought this would be right up my alley.
Wrong. It's much more the story of the author's obsession with the singer and their relationship as singer and fan, with the main focus being the author's experiences and feelings. I didn't learn much about James Bowman except in a very scattered way. Disappointing.

Burning in Blueness, The Dark-Light of a Countertenor is an account of a passion for the male high voice that began following a BBC radio broadcast in 1972 featuring countertenor James Bowman. The author became devoted to the art of James Bowman and through regular communication and meetings got to know him over ten years. This book is wonderful. The music is discussed in terms of technique, history and content with fascinating insights from professionals and experts. The life and personality of James Bowman is presented in the context of one who understands and has a sense of the man himself.

The real focus of this work is not a specific performer, but rather it is a study of passion for a specific art form. Maxine Handy takes the reader through a land of misty rivers and moonlit churchyards, evoked by the ethereal sound of the countertenor. Classical and spiritual references from both within James Bowman's repetoire and other sources make this a very thought provoking, completely satisfying read.

About the Author
Siobhan Roberts is a science writer and winner of four National Magazine Awards. While writing Genius At Play she was a Director’s Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and a fellow at the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York. Her first book, King of Infinite Space, won the Mathematical Association of America’s Euler Prize for expanding the public’s view of mathematics. She lives in Toronto.

A fascinating biography.

Conway is a highly unusual mathematician. Correspondingly, this excellent book offers an unusual combination of biographical narrative, elements of insight into Conway's mathematics, and stories from several years the author spent interviewing Conway while researching this book.

I was especially impressed with the way the mathematics was seamlessly integrated into the text. There is just enough precision to satisfy those with more technical interests, while remaining of interest to those who have no inclination to understand the details, and merely want a glimpse of Conway's insane genius.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION

I downloaded this book in mid-July, 2015, shortly after it was released on Kindle. Amazon should be ashamed of the formatting. The book has challenges, which I will write about when I am done, but no challenge could be more insurmountable than the lousy formatting job Amazon has done with this book. The author frequently quotes the subject without quotation marks. Sometimes these quotes are buried in with the main text of the book; sometimes they are in indented in smaller fonts; sometimes they just spring up like new paragraphs without any introduction; all of which means working through this book is like dissection. Buy a hard copy of the book or send Amazon a message that you insist that they have a human being edit their Kindle version before springing it on an unsuspecting population.

Fascinating biography of a stellar mathematician

Fascinating biography of a stellar mathematician. He's infinitely talented, but seriously unbalanced. The book presents an affectionate but serious look at his career, strange habits, and obsessions, replete with quotes from the subject and entertaining opinions on being chronicled. It's more like a conversation than a novel.

Wives, heart attacks, professional jealousy, poor eating habits, strange ways to motivate himself to research and prepare for lectures, the prose is straightforward and moderately unsparing.

As the one-star rating guy already said, the Kindle version loses the formatting that says whether the writer or Conway himself is talking, and about 1/4 of the book is quotes. One can more or less figure it out, but it's a nuisance. That's why this rating is not 5 stars.

There's maybe 1/4 of the book that is math and games, which I found more inscrutable and less amusing than the rest, despite being a scientist, although that seems par for the course in biographies of science. I picked this up because of a thorough review that I saw in Nature - http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v523/n7561/full/523406a.html
