A good beginning guide for JavaFX

I believe this book will satisfy the needs of anyone who has an interest to get their feet wet in the JavaFX world. Is it written in a fashion that only long time Java developers will be able to read? The answer is no. The book starts out by telling you what JavaFx is and introduces the tools needed to complete this guide (for this author it was NetBeans). It even goes into how and where to get NetBeans and how to configure it for use with this book. Although it states that you don't need to have any\much programming experience, but it does throw some terms at you (like MVC) that would be helpful if you at least have a rudamentary understanding of what it is. Lets face it, this is not an MVC book. I like the way the book throws some self test questions at the ends of each chapter that kind of focus the readers attention on certain key points. Sure there are some typos but I'm not sure I have ever read a book that doesn't have them. All in all I think the book is well written and laid out, and is easy to follow along. If you have an interest in finding out what JavaFX is and what it has the potential to do then you will be well served by this book.

Needs Editing

I am new to JavaFX and don't mind the hands-on approach leading me along step-by-step. But I do expect the path to be the correct one. Unfortunately it is not - at least at the start. And that's the most important time for an author to build confidence in the reader! So J.F. needs to fix a serious problem in Chapter 2. On page 11, J.F. illustrates (Figure 2-2) how to create a new project in JavaFX utilizing a JavaFX FXML Application (the illustration is difficult to read, as well). So far so good. However Figure 2-3 on the next page illustrates a window generated for a "JavaFX Application" project, not a "JavaFX FXML Application" project. J.F then goes on to reference - many times I might add - the files Sample.fxml, and Sample.java which magically appear in the project source package. What's going on here? The answer lies in the window that is actually generated for a JavaFX FXML Application project. It includes a field called "FXML name" in which the user needs to insert the identifier "Sample." The control and view files (of MVC renown) then appear in the source package as "SampleController.java" and "Sample.fxml." Note that "Sample.java" does not! If this sounds confusing, it is, and I wasted an hour trying to figure it out. Wait, there's more. I get the impression that there exists an older book by J.F purporting to describe JavaFX Script. That explains the following sentence which appears in the middle of page 18: "Typically, comments are added to explain the purpose of a script [sic] file as a whole, or possibly larger sections of code." Here J.F. is simply trying to explain the use of comments in JavaFX to the novice reader, but slips up and fails to correct the earlier manuscript written for the script version of JavaFX. All in all, I find the first two chapters very uneven in terms of the audience for whom this book was written. At times I am being treated like a rank novice and at other times I am expected to be familiar with terms that have not been introduced: e.g. "extend." And as for my experience with XML making life easier in the JavaFX FXML world, all I can say is that learning and using the complete suite of XML packages is a career in itself, and I wouldn't be doing any JavaFX coding if I could muck about with the likes of XSLT. One has to suspect when languages, like Java, are written by committees you end up with a compromised language. It's no wonder that R and Python are so popular with the scientific community. I will report future problems with J.F.'s manuscript as a read along. I also have been unable to find an errata page anywhere on the net.

Taught me enough to get started writing JavaFX apps

I found the book easy to follow and it provided enough instructions to build some beginning JavaFX apps. I liked the way he provided links for all the editors needed and it was easy to get the environment configured to follow along with some basic examples. As with any programming language you will need to perform additional research to find ways to perform complicated tasks with JavaFX but the book states it is a "Quick Start Guide" so I didn't expect it to explain everything to me.

A very good first try on scientific methodology

Researching is a very rigorous process. However it does not necessarily mean that our methodology books should go that way, sabotaging our deep interest of becoming good and well-trained researches with boring and unsalted narrative. This book is just an example for this. I would say it is the very first introduction to mastering research projects and the path for building a genuine interest in the topic. For me, this is the main triumph for it. However, other books on specific topics will be needed.

A Strategic Guide For Those Already Improving Themselves

First off, I'd say I purchased and read this book within 24 hours because it's that good. The introduction is very honest and highlights a cautionary tale that most self-improvement, executive coaching, and whatever books don't address: The downside to improving yourself. That is, growing distant from the everyday man around you because your life just cannot be understood by others. It can be a lonely road at times, and it's striking that the book starts off like this.

Because of this, I feel like this book is best for people already working on themselves, who've already realized that they don't fit the "mold" and looking for inspiration and advice on how to get to the next level. In addition, the book was written in one week, and it does show at times. However, the gems in the book are well worth the price.

Sebastian tells you why you should do cool stuff and create wealth. If you're not convinced, he gives you more and better reasons all the way through the book. Don't care about money? He tells you why that's fine and doesn't matter.

Once you are persuaded, he tells you how. It includes living strategically, and not tactically or mindlessly. It involves breaking bad habits. Creating good ones. He tells you why you need to throw away that TV remote, and why you need to suffer and feel the strife to break through. He kicks your ass repeatedly. In every story, and post, he will make you wonder why you've been planted on your couch the last few weeks/months/years. You are halfway through the book, you feel like standing up. It's now harder to sit down and read. You need to be doing something, anything. You have energy. Sebastian has given it to you. Good. Use it to write him a thank you note. Not sure what cool stuff you will be doing but are ready to jump in? Sebastian tells you to build some fundamental skills, and try different things, to always be producing - whether its a review, a photograph, a tiny utility program. Always be connecting with people. Serving them. Letting them know they helped you. Help them. So now, you've done some cool stuff. You wish to go further. Is it an empire you want to build? A dynasty? Sebastian will help you forge your path. Wait. What's this? Are you hurting? Murphy's law has kicked in. Nothing's going right. What to do? Abandon not the path! Focus on the fundamentals, says Sebastian. Keep your diet steady. Exercise. Don't make major decisions. Don't be stupid. You shall bounce back. Is the path right for you? If so, buy this book already.

Grab life by the balls

"Who am I? I'm a little crazy, to tell you the truth. You kind of have to be to get anything done in the world."

This is how Sebastian describes himself in Ikigai, and it's basically what drew me toward him and this book. I like people who get things done, who move things, who shift views and change perspectives, and Sebastian Marshall is very much this type of person. Sure, he talks much, but he's got much to say.

Ikigai is a smart compilation of blog posts and articles that captures the essence of Sebastian's drive and vision in a simple, straightforward manner. It's a "stream of consciousness" type of book, more like a personal diary than a blog, and most definitely not a literary piece of work---but who the hell cares, it's the message that matters. If you're unwilling to grasp the useful ideas in this book because it doesn't shove big words and fancy formatting down your throat, it's your loss dude. And shame on you.

There's a lot of information in here about how to optimize your entire existence, from your daily schedule and habits to your effectiveness, your career and your passions, your relationships and your ultimate goals. It's not warm and fuzzy, and you need to have done some previous hard thinking about yourself to even understand how brilliant Sebastian's tips are. But if you're already actively pursuing ways to improve your life and gain more control over the outcome of your hard labor, then this book is definitely for you.

Embarrassment and errors are part of doing meaningful things. It's not such a big deal, really. Keep in mind you're going to die. It puts things into perspective. Mild discomfort? Who cares, you're going to f***ing DIE at some point. DO SOME COOL STUFF BEFORE THAT HAPPENS.

Fantastic / all the missing pieces I've wanted to know / but the myth and magic of her rich rich life left intact . Marriane is as honest as a cool clear creek. And wow /can anyone match her life so far ? She understood what she was looking at . She knew these folks. Her insights are better than anyone's , she was there , and she puts you there .

My very favorite autobiography.

I first read this book in grad school while studying Jung. I consider Jung to be the most influential "mind scientist" of the 20th century. Read the preface to this compelling and honest story of a most remarkable life...and you will feel the pull to read on. In just these few pages, Jung says so much. He says how the power of mythology is a better tool for telling his tale than a scientific inquiry....and describes life and death in a most accurate and poetic fashion. and this is only the preface!
I bought the kindle version so this masterpiece would always put Jung in my "cloud."

Rare treat!

I am not a psychologist or therapist professional, but I have been a seeker in understanding my own psyche, and this is a rare treat into the life, mind and subconscious of a great teacher, philosopher and thinker who transformed the world. Jung's contribution to the idea of the collective unconscious and its symbols, and his ability to look at a persons life more wholly from a spiritual and symbolic level, rather then as just something that happened to one, makes this an irresistible book for anyone who has ever contemplated what their dreams, memories and reflections might be revealing from the deep inner psyche and how that might transform and cope with their life. It takes allot of guts as an academic to share what can be perceived as your crazy side.
