In the middle of the 19th century the leaders of the City of Qu�bec dreamed of a great bridge across the St. Lawrence River. It would link their city to the new railway lines developing along the south shore, giving Qu�bec a competitive edge in its long struggle with Montr�al for commercial dominance.

The width and depth of the St. Lawrence necessitated a bridge of unprecedented scale, and many of the best engineers of the time turned their attention to the problem. Three serious proposals for a bridge never materialized. A fourth plan finally moved ahead at the beginning of the 20th century, only to end in of one of the greatest construction failures of all time. In 1907 the incomplete structure collapsed into the river with a loss of 75 lives. From the ruins of this first attempt emerged still another plan. In 1916, when the great bridge was nearing completion, tragedy struck again. As the huge center span was being lifted into place, it fell into the river, taking another 11 lives. It was not until a year later that a replacement was installed, and the great bridge was finally complete.

Today the Qu�bec Bridge stands firmly astride the St. Lawrence, safely carrying the commerce of Canada across its broad waters. No one has yet built a longer cantilever span, so the bridge still ranks as the greatest of its kind.

The Bridge at Qu�bec provides a full account of the long effort to build a bridge at this difficult site, with particular emphasis on the extraordinary story of the failure of the first one, the human tragedies that accompanied it, and the lessons that its story holds today for engineers and builders as they continue to extend the boundaries of technology. Fully illustrated, the book makes clear to the general reader and technical audiences alike the engineering issues involved in constructing one of the world’s greatest bridges.

"In this handsome work, civil engineer and historian Middleton traces the history of the Qu�bec (Quebec) Bridge across the St. Lawrence River from its early planning stages in the 1850s, through the construction phase that ended in 1917, and on to the present day. The construction project was a tremendous undertaking, involving the erection of the world's longest cantilevered span. The project was fraught with difficulties, including two of the worst construction accidents in bridge-building history involving the loss of 86 lives. A failure analysis of these collapses is clearly presented in a way that nontechnical readers can understand. The author, who has written a number of books dealing with related matters, has done a thorough job of researching the historical aspects of the Qu�bec (Quebec) Bridge, with the history of the bridge being well illustrated by the large collection of photographs amassed by the author. A look into how Civil Engineering really was back then.

A truly fine book. I would recommend it to any prospective or freshman engineering student at the least. It tells a story of what it was really like to be in the business back at the turn of the century on a truly monumental project for it's time. The book is semi-technical in content and doesn't overwhelm the reader. The story is truly amazing. It's a fast read and likely to be remembered.

About the Author
DAVID W. TOWNSEND is Professor of Oceanography in the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine, USA. Dr. Townsend has been recognized for his teaching with the College Outstanding Teaching Award (2001) and the Distinguished Maine Professor Award (2006). He has published more than 90 papers, book chapters, and reviews. His research interests include: biological oceanography of estuaries and shelf seas; phytoplankton blooms; nutrient dynamics; fisheries oceanography; ecology and population dynamics of larval fishes and zooplankton; plankton ecology and trophodynamics; and coupling of physical and biological processes.

Great oceanography and marine biology textbook!

I'm a marine biology masters degree student and struggled with oceanography concepts throughout undergrad. This book is a great introduction to how oceanography makes sense to marine biologists. Lots of pictures and qualitative descriptions -- few equations. This author wants you to get the big picture of what is going on in the ocean to spark your interest as to why you should care about the ocean. He is not trying to confuse you with complicated concepts and equations and jargon. I highly suggest this book to all levels of education even graduate school -- this book explains a lot of concepts I am trying to wrestle with in my grad level biological oceanography in a more logical way than my assigned bio oceanography textbook. Yet it's an easy enough read that any person mildly interested in the oceans could understand the big pictures -- the book reads like a teacher is explaining a lecture to you. Cannot recommend this book enough!

Good Introductory Text

This would be a good text for upper-level undergraduate students in either oceanography or marine biology. It covers both areas in sufficient detail for a solid background; students will eventually need more advanced texts in their areas of specialization, but this is a good start. Some mathematical analysis is included in the main text, and more is provided in boxes, allowing flexibility for the instructor or student. There are a few minor errors that seemed to have escaped the editors, but all-in-all, it is a well written and illustrated text. The Further Reading section for each chapter is quite good. Classic and recent (up to 2010) books, reviews, and original research articles are cited.

CAL JILLSON is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Southern Methodist University. His recent books include Texas Politics: Governing the Lone Star State, Pursuing the American Dream: Opportunity and Exclusion Over Four Centuries, Pathways to Democracy: The Political Economy of Democratic Transitions, and The Dynamics of American Politics.

Good basics on US government

You can tell Cal Jillson tries his best to present an unbiased view of the US government in this textbook. He mostly succeeds, but his bias is exposed at points in the book. Many chapters end with a suggestion for reforming the government, and many of these involve continuing down a progressive course. Additionally, he insists on calling the US a democracy, even after stating we were founded as a federated representative republic. This is a bit misleading, as far as I know no constitutional changes have taken place since 1788 to have changed our system of government into a democracy, but that doesn't stop the author from insisting on it. The US "democracy" is often compared to other governments in Europe, which are structured quite differently, usually showing how much "better" they are at certain social issues, such as voting (in this chapter the author advocates for mandatory voter registration).

I have, overall though, found this textbook an enjoyable read. I have taken the initiative and read through most of it before my US Government class (POS 2041 here in Florida) even began. Most of the historical perspectives are non-biased. As this is an earlier version, the huge tea party uprising and all of the potential social effects on the future of government due to it is not covered here (I hope it is in his newest edition).

An Interesting Approach to Political Science

Most people will purchase this book because it is a required textbook for an American Government or Political Science class in college. However, this book makes an interesting read for those who just want to know more about their political and governmental system here in the United States.

The author takes a nice approach at teaching the different subjects throughout the book by using real world examples. There are a number of asides where the author spends one page telling the reader about a particular issue, event, or process and then asking the reader some challenge questions to make you think and learn the material.

In all this is a nice book. The price is not horrible for a textbook and the author does a good job of keeping the material interesting. I think anyone who gets this book will be pleased with the material and the manner in which it is presented. I would definitely suggest purchasing this book.

Kindle version for iPhone is incomplete

This book is very interesting. I am on chapter 2 as I write this and I have really enjoyed learning how our country formed. The only problem is that the formatting for the Kindle iPhone and iPad apps is really horrible. There are large gaps between pages and paragraphs end abruptly. The next paragraph starts and I can tell that the end of the paragraph is missing. Since I am reading this for a class - I'm concerned I'm missing out on important info and wanted to make sure this error was pointed out for others. Might be better to purchase the hard copy.

About the Author
Francis A. Carey is a native of Pennsylvania, educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, at Drexel University (B.S. in chemistry, 1959), and at Penn State (Ph.D. 1963). Following postdoctoral work at Harvard and military service, he was appointed to the chemistry faculty of the University of Virginia in 1966. Prior to retiring in 2000, he regularly taught the two-semester lecture courses in general chemistry and organic chemistry. With his students, Professor Carey has published over forty research papers in synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry. In addition to this text, he is coauthor (with Robert C. Atkins) of Organic Chemistry: A Brief Course and (with Richard J. Sundberg) of Advanced Organic Chemistry, a two-volume treatment designed for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. He was a member of the Committee of Examiners of The Graduate Record Examination in Chemistry from 1993-2000. Frank and his wife Jill, who is a teacher/director of a preschool and a church organist, are the parents of Andy, Bob, and Bill and the grandparents of Riyad and Ava.

WARNING: Very helpful textbook, but contains A LOT of content so don't be discouraged when it takes you about 1 hour to understand 10 pages of content. The Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry 8th Edition IS A MUST IF YOU WANT TO ACE ORGO! It helped me obtain a B in Orgo 1, an A in Orgo II, and an A in Orgo II lab (granted my Orgo I professor was the same for my Orgo II class and lab so I understood his teaching techniques better which is key in picking an Orgo class! Consistency in teaching style is key for understanding!) Carey is capable of teaching chemistry using both examples of chemical reactions and written explanations. Chapters are organized in a logical order - very beneficial for one's initial exposure to new functional groups and reaction families. The written text clearly explains the mechanisms behind every reaction, providing a solid understanding of chemical reactivity. Reaction examples clearly show applications of stereo- and regio-chemistry, necessary reagents, and the influence of reaction conditions upon reactivity and reaction yields.

I used this book for 3 semesters upper-level undergraduate Organic Chemistry, and as a refresher reference for graduate-level Organic Synthesis, along with Carey's Advanced Organic Chemistry texts, which are equally helpful. Other undergraduate students that were assigned other textbooks have borrowed this book from me and remarked at how much better they were able to understand the material as presented by Carey. This book is B-23 approved!

Item in excellent condition and priced well!

This book is just what I needed for my Organic Chemistry class. I am rather pleased with the author's writing style and the way the book is laid out. It is already helping me understand concepts that I was missing out on due to my lack of a textbook. Out of everywhere I looked, this was the best deal for buying this book. The international edition textbooks were even more expensive than this one that I purchased. Shipping was a little slow, but well worth it. I am very satisfied!

Organic is rough, but this book is fantastic

An annoying feature of the book is the way they make you buy the answer book to compliment the book itself. I can understand space is an issue, but that answer book is highly priced itself. Other than that pet peeve this book is fantastic. Nearing the end of my second semester of organic chemistry this book has done its part. Read the book, and you'll do fine. You cannot go wrong by simply reading this book alone and ignoring the teacher since this book covers much more than the teacher can or will ever go over. It's not like you will have much of a choice in the book you want anyways, since most teachers don't give you that freedom, but don't be intimidated by this book since it does its job well.
