First of all, I wouldn't typically read book like this, but King is my favorite author and I will read anything puts together, regardless of its genre.

I started reading this book with high hopes, due to the many positive reviews this book has (plus a good friend recommended it). All in all I still don't know where I stand with it. Parts of it were great, but at times not so great. It's hard to say I didn't enjoy the book, because I did. Usually I don't gravitate toward shorter reads, such as this, and that may be why I had some issues with "The Long Walk".

• A truly dreadful sense of suspense throughout; Edge of your seat moments a-plenty

• A terrifyingly new take (as far as I know) on national entertainment

• The game show quotes at the beginning of each chapter really add to the twisted, fucked-up idea of the ultimate game show

• I feel like there are a lot of details left out of the story, details that could cleared some of the confusion I had when reading this. Some aspects of the story were just thrown out there and were never heard of again, which aggravated me (personally)

• There was also needless information that didn't add to the story whatsoever. Again, it can be a little confusing

• The book does take time to pick up pace. I wasn't 100% interested in the book until I reached Chapter 7/8

•THE ENDING. The last two chapters seemed extremely rushed. At this point the direction of the story and the characters becomes somewhat lack-luster. I was expecting a drawn out ending, one that would make me want to scream with anticipation...but it never happened. To me, the ending was boring and not at all what I would expect from Stephen King.

He wrote this as an undergrad!?

I have been a Stephen King fan since I was about 14 years old. In recent years, I have not ready much (if any?) fiction. However, this summer, my 8 year old daughter took a creative writing course and when she would come home and tell me what all she learned in class that day, I was inspired to read fiction once again. This book had a lot of great reviews on Amazon and it's really Stephen King's first book -- one that he apparently wrote while still and undergraduate!? I kept saying to myself as I worked through the book, "I can't believe his genius mind wrote this as an undergrad." I think back to my own undergraduate days and quite frankly, looking at them in hindsight I'm embarrassed over some of the papers that I turned in. Well, that's why Stephen King is a successful writer and I'm not! In all seriousness, this book is a pager-turner! I read through the book in about 2 weeks and I had a hard time putting it down.

I would love to ask the writer what the book means. I mean, it's a great story but there just has to be some sort of symbolic meaning to it all. There's a whole Wikipedia article discussing this book. I think that there might be something to the notion that the Long Walk represents life and we all -- at times -- fight with one another but also, even with those same people who we might fight with, we will for whatever reason also "join forces" with them. I don't know the answer to my question, but I have thought about what symbolism might be hidden in the pages of this work.

If you're looking for a really great book to read this summer while on your "vacay" I would HIGHLY recommend this piece.

A Welcome Return to a Master Writer

Have read this book many times (including when it was part of a short story collection under the name, Richard Bachman). This is my favorite work by King/Bachman. So understated, yet full of emotion. Really tight writing. After reading it at least five or six times over the years, I feel as I personally know each of the characters.

I belong to Kindle Unlimited, so have been reading very many independently published books. Don't get me wrong, under the sometimes dreck, I've found diamonds and discovered many new authors with a real gift for writing. But, now and again, it is good to go back and read one of the masters. This book is way over my budget, but oh, so worth it!

Powerful and Transformative

This mockingbird still sings

I've just re-read this work to see how it stands the test of time. The most impressive feature of the novel is the narrative style. The narrator is an adult remembering or reflecting on the story in a child's voice, a neat juggling act that mixes satire and naivete. The satire is reminiscent of Jane Austen, especially when Lee, through Scout's voice, tackles education, class, bigotry, and the missionary society. The indictment of race in the novel is well documented, especially the casual use of the "N" word, even by the children. While some may find the portrait of Atticus as hero to be overblown, it is a loving and touching characterization on the author's part. The scene where the children join Atticus to confront the potential lynch mob at the jail still makes me cry. It seems to me that Lee has been pitch-perfect in capturing time and place. My conclusion: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD remains a classic of 20th century literature.

Great book for young readers!

Now that a few of my children are reaching the older realm, I am always on the hunt for good and wholesome books on a much higher level.
And let me tell you, it can be really hard.

It seems that anything written for modern day children has today's worldy junk in it. Negativity against "annoying" siblings, name calling at school, etc. Not stuff I want my children reading on their own accord. I have honestly found that to get the type of literature I want for them, I must search for old classics, or at least find ones written today that tell a story from generations ago, such as taking place in the prairie days.
And it's alot easier finding those type of stories for girls.

So I must tell you how thrilled I was to find No Place Like Holmes by Jason Lethcoe for my book loving 8 year old son. It is written for ages 9-12, but he has absolutely no problem with devouring a book like this.

With short chapters, and just enough fun-loving suspense to keep their minds alert and guessing, it is such a great and simple "mystery" for young boys.
I love the the way readers are kept engaged by giving various situations to solve, and decipher what might happen next. There is even a recipe in the back, that I am just waiting for my son to beg to make, just because "it's in the book". :o)

But my favorite part? Young Griffin shows total respect to his elders, and in fact everyone, even when he is misunderstood and mistreated. He is polite, smart, and witty, and has a healthy curiosity. He trusts God, and learns how faith and prayer can change any situation.

No Place Like Holmes is definitely a winner in both my book, and my sons! (And I know my daughter will enjoy it as well once her brother lets her borrow it!) If you are looking for a quality book for your young boy, I highly recommend it!

Delightful middle-grade read for kids who love mysterys!

If I was a kid I think I would have enjoyed this much more than I did. It's a cute book, but the description of everything Griffin sees with his all-knowing detectives' eyes gets a little bit irritating. His uncle's an ass, as it the obsession with beating Sherlock Holmes, but luckily towards the end of the book that gets dropped. I was not a fan of the whole twee "I've got a robot butler named Watts and a Moriarty of my own" bit, but I doubt a younger child would pick up on the similarity. I thought the steampunk elements seemed pretty forced, but its big business these days so it's understandable.

This book was very well written, the mystery was engaging, and it was fun to `solve' it along with Griffin. He's a good kid and a great role model. I especially liked the mini-mystery at the end of the books as I was a huge fan of Encyclopedia Brown and the CLUE series as a kid so it was nice to see that the tradition lives on. I would definitely give this book to a kid, as I think they would really enjoy it. Overall it was a great children's book read!

*This is a Christian book. Griffin's father is an Especial minister, so there is some talk of praying and God. It's not shown in a huge way, nor is it a really big plot point, but it is there.

Fantastic Holmes series for kids!

This is definitely a book that kids will enjoy. It was written by an author with a whimsical imagination! Griffin Sharpe is a young boy with acute deducting skills. He notices the finest details without trying. His mind is always thinking about the situations at hand, and his story will keep curious readers busy trying to catch all the details too.

Griffin is sent to London to visit his uncle, Rupert Snodgrass, who lives at 221A Baker Street (that is 221A, not 221B, mind you). His uncle is a detective/inventor, who lives next door to the famed Sherlock Holmes. And with the story set as is, a mysterious disappearance takes place, Moriarty enters the scene, and young Master Sharpe has landed himself into his first true crime that will test his clever brain.

I found that the author did well in duplicating an inquisitively sharp mind like Holmes' and creating it in the form of a young boy who is eager to discover more. There were parts of the story which I felt were a little corny, or out of place, especially concerning some of the parts pertaining to Holmes and Watson, but it still turned out fine. It was rather funny to compare all of Snodgrass's "inventions" (which he has crafted through steam-power) to the authentic technology we have now. It did add an extra flair of fun to the story, that's for sure. The fact that Rupert Snodgrass had built a robot (and actually named it dangerously close to a certain assistant/sidekick) was a bit over the top for me, but, oh well.

In closing, I must mention that I was most impressed by the way that Lethcoe brought across Christianity and prayer into an adventure story for kids. Well done!!

Would have been better just to read the bible!

Was kind of excited about receiving this book read it in one day. This is relatively sad read like the old testament in the bible. Most outdated and useless information in real estate today. You might have had success 47 years ago by reading this book. In my opinion once the book was written it has already had outdated information. Leave this book alone, don't spend the money on it it is absolutely worthless.

This has been rewritten it appears with a few new covers for a half century. The basic premise of the book's teachings would apply to someone coming from another planet and states that yes, in theory, you can do this. If you slowly go into real estate and work it, by the time you retire you should have made a bit of money. It reads like a turn of the century boring book.
