ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kenneth M. Settel, MD is a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, where he teaches a course on Organizational Consultation to senior residents in Psychiatry. He is a principal in The Boswell Group, consulting to CEO's, their Organizations and Boards of Directors, to family businesses and to professional service organizations around issues of leadership, organizational development and conflict resolution. Over the past thirty-five years, he has written and given talks to the business community, to the psychiatric and to the psychoanalytic community about organizational function and leadership. He has a clinical and business consultation practice based in Brookline Massachusetts.

Joseph Cardillo is a top-selling author in the fields of health, mind-body-spirit, and psychology. An essential handbook for the entrepreneur

I thoroughly enjoyed reading CEO Psychology by Dr. Kenneth Settel and Joseph Cardillo. It is a fast and easy read and well-organized. This practical book is an essential primer for anyone taking on leadership in a start-up, small business, or a large organization. The book is the distillation of years of experience and consulting that Dr. Settel has done. I worked with him a few years ago when asked to chair a task force organized by a national professional organization to resolve an internal leadership conflict that threatened the future of the venerable organization. Dr. Settel's organizational diagnosis and conflict management skills saved the society from a destructive schism -- a rescue that many members doubted was possible. No one resigned, no one was fired, and with time the rift healed thanks to Dr. Settel's skillful intervention. Dr. Settel also consulted to my early-stage start-up company, a health information technology company, that was faltering due to leadership and communication problems among the founders. Once again, his intervention helped get the founders back on the path to success. In CEO Psychology, Settel and Cardillo spell out the principals, steps and actions necessary for a successful learning organization. The book is a great value and will be one that you will want to share with your friends and colleagues.

Useful for business and beyond

I found this book to be thorough, thoughtful and easy to digest. It has applications not only for CEOs and business executives but its principles can be readily applied to non-business organizations as well. The book is written in a staightforward conversational manner with case examples to demonstrate the differing strengths and vulnerabilites of management styles and the inevitable clash of personalities that occur in dynamic or complex organizations. The authors suggestions emphasize the identification of psychological factors and pragmatic steps that can be taken to ameliorate management dysfunction.
The author is a psychiatrist and business consultant so the book is "psychologically minded" both in its chapter organization and the presentations of core principles for maintaining effective business leadership especially as growth and changes in management style produce organizational stress.
A very satisfying read that is both pithy, concise and pragmatic.

A guide for leadership growth

This book describes, in a simple and straightforward fashion, the psychological tasks of a leader. Ken Settel draws on his extensive experience as a psychiatrist consulting to leaders to offer insight into the "mind of the executive." He uses psychological concepts in a clear and jargon-free way to provide guidance on mastering the emotional demands of leadership. While there are many books on leadership, CEO Psychology is uniquely positioned at the intersection of individual psychology, group psychology, and organizational structure and role to provide a unique set of tools for leadership growth.
In his wisdom and directness, Settel epitomizes the best characteristics of an executive advisor and coach. I highly recommend this book to leaders at all levels of an organization and also to the advisors who work with them. CEO Psychology can provide a clear and accessible framework for executives and their coaches to work together on the challenges of leadership.

a nice introduction for mechanical engineers

Provides a thorough introduction to the field in a matter that is readily accessible for undergraduate mechanical engineers. The most complex chapter on viscoelastic theory is well-explained, and makes only a modest use of calculus. Discusses all the basics (creep, relaxation, temperature, load history, etc.) The Chapters are as follows:

1) Structure of the molecule
2) Structure of polymeric solids
3) The elastic properties of rubber
4) Viscoelasticity
5) Yield and fracture
6) Reinforced polymers
7) Forming
8) Design

For those interested in the computer modeling of the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic solids, there is another excellent book that delves more deeply (and requires a bit more math). "Mechanical Response of Polymers" by Wineman & Rajagopal will get you where you want to go when it comes to predicting the effects of time, temperature, and loading history. Also very accessible, although probably more suited to the graduate level.

About the Author

Sung Chul Cha is a Senior Research Engineer at the Hyundai Motor Group, Automotive, Research and Development Division, in Hwaseong, Korea. He received his Diploma of Engineering (1998) and a Doctor of Engineering degree (2001) in Georesources and Materials Engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany. In 2002 he became a research associate and postdoc at the Department of Interface Chemistry and Surface Engineering at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE), D�sseldorf, Germany, and continued his research in the field of high temperature materials and reactions including coating technology. In 2005 he began work in the area of materials engineering and material properties at Siemens Power Generation, M�lheim a.d. Ruhr, Germany. Since 2007 he has been employed at the Hyundai Motor Group and responsible for the development of automotive materials. Dr. Cha has published over 20 scientific papers and holds more than 30 international patents. He was a keynote speaker, chair, and reviewer of the session on “Coated Materials” (2014) and a reviewer and chair of the session “Automotive Tribology” (2013) at the SAE World Congress & Exhibition and he was an invited keynote speaker for the SVC 2014 Conference.

Ali Erdemir is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Senior Scientist with international recognition and significant accomplishments in the fields of materials science, surface engineering and tribology. He received his B.S. degree from Istanbul Technical University in 1977 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1986, respectively. His discoveries of nearly frictionless carbon and superhard nanocomposite coatings, as well as a range of novel nanolubricants and lubrication additives, have been hailed as major breakthroughs in the field. Erdemir’s research is directed toward nanoscale design and large-scale manufacturing of new materials, coatings and green lubricants for a broad range of applications in manufacturing, transportation and other energy conversion and utilization systems where further increases in efficiency, reliability and environmental compatibility are the primary objectives. Erdemir has received numerous awards, including five R&D 100 Awards; holds 16 U.S. patents; and has published more than 290 papers, 18 invited book and handbook chapters, and two edited books. He is a Fellow of ASME, STLE, AVS, and ASM-International.

Deepening into Living and Dying

Ahhhhh, Carolyn, what a beautiful, exquisite gift you have presented the world with this bookl It is profound, yet presented with love and compassion; it is simple and practical, without being a 'how to'. It provides suggestions and guides and gentle, yet straightforward 'walking along with' those who are preparing for their dying,..... And who of us are not preparing for this awesome occasion? When I think of what I have read thus far, I hear these words present themselves to describe my experience of your Presence in your words and pages: 'It's the balm of Gilead that heals the fearful, confused soul'. Up through these first chapters, I felt myself be drawn in and surrendering to the flow of your compassion and gentleness of presentation of these huge concerns that most people haven't dared open to before now, and I felt myself let go again into my own process. Thank you for the beauty of yourself present in the pages of the book.

I've been engaging in similar remembrances and exploration of my life during this past year as I have been dying to my life as I have known it, opening to, identifying, and connecting the threads of my life, daring to face as much of the truth about my self/my life as I can, deeper and deeper, as I open to what wants to happen next. by Carolyn Conger, PhD

Dr. Carolyn Conger has penned an excellent self-help workbook whose primary audience are those who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It is also useful (nearly mandatory reading) for the family and friends of the one facing certain death.

Dr. Conger's writing reflects her teaching and life style: Insightful, gentle yet direct. She has been teaching intuitive living and personal transformation for 30 Years.

She concludes each chapter with a series of questions which, when answered truthfully, create a road map for the readers future. She refers to them as "exercises."

I use the word "truthfully" because doing so under threat of death can be one of the most challenging and brave things we have been asked do, ever. Dr. Conger is fully aware of this challenge and gives excellent and sensitive suggestions for meeting this challenge.

For those who are terrified by their condition as well as the questions, Dr. Conger provides useful relaxation techniques and easy to follow instructions for accessing simple forms of meditation.

If I, or anyone I know was facing a death sentence , Dr. Conger's book would be my first choice and my highest recommendation.

Excellent Book on Several Levels

As a therapist, I found the book to be useful in two ways. First, it increased my understanding of what a person/client may be experiencing when diagnosed with a terminal illness, including the variety of responses and needs one might have in such circumstances. Second, it provided specific, easy to use exercises to help loved ones/clients address their needs at this potentially rich time of their lives. I decided, for myself, that I would do the exercises and keep a journal. What motivated me to do this was the thought of why should I wait to be diagnosed with a terminal illness to do the exercises that the author, Carolyn Conger, describes as bringing one closer to wholeness.

Desperate, Leo and his father, Oscar, plan for Leo to take $80,000 worth of bonds from Horace's safe-deposit box. However, knowing that he is to be short-lived, Horace has his box brought to him. Discovering the theft, he informs his wife that he has willed the bonds to her. He promises to say nothing about the theft, calling it a loan. Cruelly, Regina recalls their unhappy married life, causing Horace to be stricken with a severe attack. Regina refuses to get his medicine upstairs, hoping that the effort of climbing may prove fatal. Horace collapses. Then Regina blackmails her brothers into giving her 75% of the business instead of their planned 33 1/3%, or she will reveal their theft. We feel, however, that crafty Ben holds the trump card by his parting remark, "What was a man in a wheelchair doing on a staircase?"

A Tremendous Story of Familial Greed

"The Little Foxes" by Lillian Hellman is a brilliant display of a family driven to disaster by overwhelming greed and desire. Regina, Ben, and Oscar Hubbard are siblings who work together, forsaking all others, to obtain for themselves money and power. These three "foxes" attempt to form a partnership with Mr. Marshall, a business man from Chicago, which would help to bring the northern cotton factories down to the south. Originally, it is agreed that the three will split the profit evenly, but Regina grows greedy when she realizes that there is a possibility for her to get more. She deceives her brothers, claiming that her husband Horace has failed to commit to the plan because he desires a larger percentage of the profit. But when the ailing Horace is brought home by his daughter Alexandra, he learns of the plans of his deceptive wife. He decides to take no part in this plan saying, "I'll do no more harm now. I've done enough. I'll die my own way. I'll do it without making the world any worse. I leave that to you." Once again, the evil within the Hubbard family strikes when Horace's money is stolen and invested without his knowing. Instead of growing angry, Horace forms a perfect reasoning for the situation, one in which all the good left in the family will benefit, and all the evil will suffer. But despite Horace's belief that he had tied his wife's hands this time, she still reigns the victor once again in the end.
Throughout the play, Hellman utilizes the development of one character in particular to help parallel the realization of the evil and greed within the family. Horace and Regina's daughter, Alexandra, is perhaps the only innocent family member left in the Hubbard clan. She innocently believes that her trip to retrieve her father from a northern hospital is simply to bring him home and never considers her mother's selfish motives. The "foxes" even consider utilizing Alexandra as a tool in their sick and twisted plans by having her marry her cousin Leo; through this, they could keep the money in the family. But as the play continues, the readers begin to realize that Alexandra will not be duped into following the horrible footprints that her family has left throughout the South. Instead, the readers realize her revolt with the final words of the play, "Are you afraid, Mama?" This quote alone foreshadows Alexandra's breaking away from the family to form a life of truth and happiness of her own. Hellman develops Alexandra in this way to show the possibility of a little sunlight in such a rainy and horrible lifestyle.
Overall, Hellman's play is a tremendous success in developing a set of characters who falsely show love to each other in order to help obtain riches and powers within each of their own lives. This brilliant show of intense familial greed illustrates how such selfish desires can lead to the breakdown of not only a family, but each member within it.

The Little Foxes

The Little Foxes written by Lillian Hellman is an excellant read. Hellman's play shows the evils and innocence of the south that plauged it at the turn of the century. Hellman divides the characters of her book into the evil and innocent. The innocent not being able to stop the evil and only standing by and watching it happen. The Little Foxes shows that people brought up in bad times, surroundings and society can overcome these ills or fall prey to them. The Little Foxes is an excellant and captivating read with the good, the bad and the ugly of society. I liked The Little Foxes because it is a dramatic read with lively and spirited characters who keep you turning the pages.

great original debunking

Call me over-analytical, but as a former sociology instructor, I check out authors' references and "facts." Sternheimer's analysis checks out. This is a fine book that combines entertaining pop-culture references with solid research to produce a theme many find distinctly unwelcome: popular culture and media are NOT the devastating influences on young people that escapists argue. Whether it's violence, sex, drugs, school failure, materialism, and so on, a youth's behavior relates far, far more to his or her poverty level and the real behaviors of nearby adults than to fictional images on the screen.

Negative comments by "LD" claiming he "knows" that "these humans" (young people)--30 million people he never met--are "not right" just by "observing" them tell me a lot more about the reviewer than about teenagers. Unfortunately, this kind of egotism is often the standard for books and reviews about youth. Those who instead take a humbler, more critical approach demand evidence beyond "what's inside my head," and Sternheimer supplies strong evidence that can be checked to back her points.

This book is clearly written and works well both for a personal read and for social scientists and teachers seeking texts for media analysis, cultural studies, sociology, social psychology, and related classes where a distinct, refreshing view challenging conventional notions is needed.

Can't wait to get started!

After watching the TV series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book and it really doesn’t disappoint. With all my favourite recipes from the series and some delectable extras I can’t wait to get started. It is all written very clearly and is easy to understand. It has been produced to a very high standard; the pictures are excellent have totally inspired to cook up a storm.

This book is about people with the courage to have principles and the conscience to live by them. The actors in these historic dramas are United States Senators and their actions are the crucible of their character. The author, John F.Kennedy, then a Senator, writes a quite adequate, authentic portrayal of the passions and perils of their deeds. This is a very readable, valuable, interesting book.

I enjoyed every minute of Profiles in Courage

I've put off reading this book for years and finally decided it was time. I enjoyed every minute of Profiles in Courage. There were several characters in the book who were not familiar to me so this was definitely a learning experience. The book, of course, was well written, moved at a comfortable pace for an historical book. My only complaint was that it could have been longer and included more characters.

Although this book has been around for decades (obviously) I have never read it. Glad I did. Nice profiles of not as well known men in Washington politics that stood for their beliefs and weren't swayed by "the party systems" and "bosses". Very good information and reading.

Early on addressing issues of skin color and class, Walrond imbued his stories with a remarkable compassion for lives controlled by the whims of nature. Despite his early celebrity, he died in London in 1966 with minimal recognition given to his passing. Arnold Rampersad’s elegant introduction reclaims this classic work and positions Walrond alongside the prominent writers of his age.

About the Author
Eric Walrond (1898–1966) moved from the Caribbean to New York, where he became a notable writer and journalist of the Harlem Renaissance. He spent much of the rest of his life in London.

Arnold Rampersad (Ph.D. Harvard) is the Sara Hart Kimball Professor in the Humanities, Emeritus, at Stanford University. He is co-editor (with Deborah E. McDowell) of Slavery and the Literary Imagination, and editor of the definitive Collected Poems of Langston Hughes. He is the author of the two-volume biography The Life of Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson: A Biography, and co-author (with Arthur Ashe) of Days of Grace: A Memoir. He is also editor of “The Harlem Renaissance.”

One of the great masterpieces of the so-called Harlem Renaissance...if you only have time to read 4 or 5 classics from this brief but astonishingly productive era, this is one you should read (along with Jean Toomer's CANE, Claude McKay's HOME TO HARLEM, Chestnut's THE CONJURE WOMAN, and Thurman's THE BLACKER THE BERRY).
