About the Author
Katharine Doob Sakenfeld is the William Albright Eisenberger Professor of Old Testament Literature and Exegesis at Princeton Theological Seminary. Professor Sakenfeld's area of expertise includes the narratives concerning the pre-monarchic period, Methods (including Feminist Interpretation), and Sociology of the Old Testament. She is a member of many academic and professional associations, including the Society of Biblical Literature (where she serves on a number of committees) and Catholic Biblical Association. Her editorial board service includes the Journal of Biblical Literature, Theology Today, Bible Review, Word and World, and many other ecumenical and denominational boards. Her publications include The Meaning of Hesed in the Hebrew Bible (Scholars Press), Faithfulness in Action: Loyalty in Biblical Perspective (Fortress Press), commentaries on Numbers (Eerdmans) and Ruth (John Knox), and Just Wives?: Stories of Power and Survival in the Old Testament Today. Her published articles have appeared in Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Theology Today, Interpretation, and the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, as well as journals published in Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and South Africa.

The Best Bible Dictionary I Have Found

I bought this set because you will find it used as a reference in many other books. The books are large and heavy but they are beautiful and every bit as good as you will find anywhere. The definitions cross-reference and are thorough. Contains persons, places, ideas and subjects. Written by experts in simple words. I love this set! The Erdmans Bible Dictionary is also excellent and contained in one volume.

A very good up to date resource. Contributors from a variety of Christian and Jewish perspectives. Contributors from a variety of countries - a good number from Canada. Some of the articles could be longer or in more depth but the articles cover every imaginable topic. good bibliographies and cross references. Articles are also very readable.

As a partner in a strategy and innovation consulting company, I read quite a few management and strategy every year, to keep up with new concepts, and sometime hype.

This management book is different. It's not about making incremental performance gains or implementing oh-so-trendy latest management gimmic. It is about "unleashing greatness in organizations". Waouh, greatness, no less!

I like it, because when you tackle management with this point of view (and I can't imagine a higher point of view than this one), everything starts to align: company values and vision, performance, people's success and fullfilment, and, at the end of the day, success.

Thanks Mr. Cousin for having set the bar so high, and yet for using such a pleasing and easy to read style (which is not so common in management litteracy).

"Exciting, Engaging and Eye-Opening". Jean Francois Cousin has demonstrated his ideas clearly in this well-wriiten book using metaphor that everyone can relate to. I got many insights reading Game Changers at the circus; one of which is no matter what roles we are assuming or playing, we can always take the lead and become a game changer in any environment or situations if we want to.

Unique approach with a lot of insight

The circus fable in Game Changers is a refreshing change from textbooks and pop business books. By giving us an easily understood narrative to act as a framework, it’s easier to absorb the many insights that Jean-Francois describes in the latter part of his book, and to see how those insights work together to help groups of people reach common goals.
Once I had an understanding of the overall message, I particularly appreciated some of the practical advice towards the end, and also in the website link given in the workbook section.
For example, an exercise recommended to develop self-awareness is, “Update yourself about who you are, your positive traits, negative traits, strengths, talents, overused strengths, and weaknesses through self-reflections and guided conversations (mini-360) with trustworthy people close to you.” How much more balanced and useful is this than an LQ exercise: forced conversations with colleagues of dubious intentions and biases over a list of prescribed questions?
Jean-Francois’s style is easy to read, succinct, and still unique, even flowery in places. Yet don’t be misled by the easy tone; there is a lot of experience and wisdom contained in the book’s pages, and I expect to refer to it often in the future.

Dark, Hopeful and Suspenseful all mixed into one with a dash of Romance

So… I don’t know who I dislike more, Andie or David. Poor, trusting, innocent Andie, she doesn’t know completely what she’s doing. I don’t think she has a clue about everything that’s happening on Halcyon Island. She just cant! Why would you do that Andie? I though we were friends :( David, David, David, your just straight up psycho(worse that Elder Allen). What makes you think these people aren’t going to succeed in leaving the island one day? They will!! They will, right? They have to!

I’m sorry, let me back up some. We come in Escalation: The Island II thinking Reagan and Connor are going to fall in love, and Andie is going to be her BFF. All things going good, the Sect is getting ready to make their move and all that. WRONG! Well, kinda right, just a lot more interesting and quite a few twist.

Reagan and Connor are getting closer, and she is in love with him, even if she doesn’t admit it yet. They almost kiss a couple of times but she’s really insecure with herself (I believe) and keeps convincing herself she’s just imagining it. Personally, I think Connor likes her too, a lot, but doesn’t have a clue about girls that aren’t your sister… If they live they’ll end up together. I hope for both!

The Sect is having a few problems. Every time they set up a meeting, or mission they are too close to getting busted. So they set up a trap to catch whoever the mole is.. but end up catching the wrong person. Robbie set it up so he would be accused of being the mole, which he is NOT! That part was kind of upsetting for me.. Either he really loves Andie, or he’s really devoted to David the psycho. I don’t know which one would be better…Just saying..

Reagan and Laney come up with a great pan to get the last of the info they need to get off the island. This is when the real mole comes out. After being beater to different degrees Reagan, Connor, Laney and all the other Sect members are brought before the “Flock” to receive their public shaming. After another beating they are brought to the pen to await their actual punishments.

After everything settles down in the pen, Reagan looks around…. Yup! There, in the corner is Elder Allen. This was just creepy for me. The dude is seriously nuts! But he give a nice warning. Something huge and serious is going to happen in Deliverance: The Island III and I cannot wait until it come out! Hopefully the wait isn’t too long!!

Riveting and Ingenious!

Reagan's been on Halcyon Island, long enough to become a shepherd (protector of the people); and long enough to know she wants off this psycho island, so she becomes part of the sect.(Those who want to leave the island.) The sect is making plans but someone always seems to find out. Is someone leaking info to David, the religious order's crazy leader? Who and why?
The suspense builds as the characters attempt to oust the mole and obtain their freedom. Riveting and ingenious action/drama keep these pages turning! Part 3 can't arrive too soon!

Intriguing

First of all the book was copyrighted in 1976 and apparently first published in 1982. That is eons ago in the science of cognition and brain imaging. So I would like to know how the past 2 and a half decades have affected the theories in this book.
I also note that the author taught at Princeton University (he died in 1997), so his theories ought to have received a hearing. But apparently the follow-up book he intended was never published, and he was considered somewhat of a maverick, if not quite a crackpot. This website offers some perspective: [...]
His theory, in simplest terms, is that until about 3000 years ago, all of humankind basically heard voices. The voices were actually coming from the other side of the brain, but because the two hemispheres were not in communication the way they are now for most of us, the voices seemed to be coming from outside. The seemed, in fact, to be coming from God or the gods.
So far, so good. That is certainly imaginable to most of us, because we know that schizophrenics and some others still hear voices in apparently this manner today.
But he also posits that many sophisticated civilizations were created by men and women who were all directed by these godlike voices. What is not very clearly explained (a serious gap in his theory) is how all the voices in these "bicameral civilizations," as he calls them, worked in harmony. But his theory is that ancient Greece, Babylon, Assyria, Egpyt, and less ancient but similar Mayan and Incan kingdoms were all built by people who were not "conscious" in our modern sense.
When one hears voices, whether then or now, the voices tend to be commanding and directive, and the need to obey them compelling. Free will is not possible. And so the people who built the pyramids were not self-aware as we are, did not feel self-pity, did not make plans, but simply obeyed the voices, which somehow were in agreement that the thing must be done.
Again, when he mentions that hypnosis may be triggering a reversion to a similar kind of consciousness, in which a voice, somehow channeled through the sub-conscious rather than the reasoning part of the brain, has an unusual compelling quality to it, and enables a person to do things that in their conscious analytic mind they are unable to do, we feel that we do have a glimmer that such a state of being is possible.
Of course, he connects these ideas to schizophrenia, seeing that as a throw-back to an earlier kind of mind-state, though now socially unacceptable and also unacceptable to its victim, who retains a remembrance of what it was to have control of his or her own mind.
He also sees prophets as remnants of the older mind, still able to hear the voices after most people had lost the ability. And he sees idol worship and modern religious behavior as both signs of a longing for the lost certainty and simplicity of a world in which decisions didn't have to be made, and all were of one accord as to what the gods wanted done.
I don't see much evidence for the pastoral simplicity which he thinks the bicameral mind lived in. But I do think that it is possible that not only ancient people but even many modern people have mind-experiences that are very different from our individualistic, introspective, self-determined ideas. In fact, I think relatively few human beings question and ponder and change belief systems as we might. The feeling of being adrift in a world that we can't understand, struggling with questions about everything, is far from universal, I think.
It is pertinent that he calls the shift from bicameral (two houses) to modern consciousness a "breakdown." He sees the shift as happening in response to crises and threats in the environment, but he doesn't present it as necessarily positive, and certainly not as pleasant to those living in its shadow. He sees the cries of the Jews and many other people for God to "rend the heavens and come down," to "not forsake them," as cried from people who no longer hear the "voices" that seemed to be the gods, and who desperately miss them.
In view of individuals such as Mother Teresa, who at one point had a clear inner sense of being directed by God (not necessarily actual auditory voices) and then lost that sense of presence and had to walk blindly thereafter (or silently would be a better metaphor), perhaps we would agree that the experience of the gods or God going silent not only happened at large in human history but is often recapitulated in individuals' personal history as well.
If Jaynes is on to something (and I think he is, though I think he may have pushed his "theory of everything" too far and lost scientific credibility), his theory does help us understand why there is a widespread belief that in Biblical times, God interacted with people in a very different way than He does now. The Bible, and other holy books as well, are remnants of a time when human beings own inner sense of right and wrong, clean and unclean, enemy and neighbor, were experienced as coming from outside of them, from disembodied voices that commanded great power. As the mind (or brain) developed, this split healed (or this mind broke down?) and this knowing become a still small voice in many people, and in others a resounding silence.
The question remains: should we take the reductionist view, and look at all religious ideas as merely misunderstandings based on schizophrenic-like delusions and hallucinations? Or should we take the view that God, who in times past spoke to us in fire and plague and audible voices (and later in dreams and visions) has now become one with humanity and speaks to us in the silence of our own hearts?
A fascinating book, raising as many questions as it answers, but well worth the reading.

Fascinating thesis

Why is it that the characters in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Iliad and the oldest books of the Bible behave in a manner that seems utterly alien to modern readers, but by the time of the New Testament and the classic Greek dramatists charcters seem to have the same feelings and motivations of modern man? Jaynes addresses this question, among others, in one of the most thought provoking books I've read.
Basically, he posits that lacking full consciousness (yet having language), prehistoric man's actions were often governed by voices, which are in many ways similar to certain forms of schizophrenia. His full argument is much deeper and far more subtle than I can deliver in a one-line synopsis.
The book is not a drum-beating New Age manual for making peace with our proto-selves, although many readers seem to have taken just that away from his discussion on the origins of religion.
The thesis is, of course, utterly unproveable, and both orthodox classicists and anthropologists are at odds with it. But it is remarkable in its originality. One needn't be convinced by the book to enjoy it; read it purely for Jayne's breadth of knowledge and his originality of thought and it will be well worth your time.

A paradigm-buster par excellence

It's hard to describe exactly what this book did to me. Suffice it to say that my views on history, religion, language and consciousness seem to be permanently altered, and my reading and thinking have broadened as a result. Jaynes defines conscousness too narrowly for some philosophers and psychologists, who seem to want it to include all of perception, but for me, his focus on interior dialogue, conceptual space, the notion of self, the ability to narratize and project this self into theoretical situations, is right on target. These are the kinds of things that create our notions of ourselves as human. Considerable space is devoted to anatomy, and split-brain studies, but the bulk of the book relies on archaeology, ancient art, ancient texts, and their use of language. This is the thrust of Jaynes' argument: consciousness arose only relatively late in human development, appearing first in the Middle East at the end of the second millenium BCE., and this consciousness was dependent on language. He theorizes that the right hemisphere of the brain was specialized to recall longterm information, as the left was (and still is, in most people) specialized for language. Pre-conscious people, he contends, hallucinated instructions of a super-ego-like nature generated in the right brain. In the simplest, small scale, early societies, these hallucinations were attributed to ancestors, chiefs, or kings. Eventually they were attributed to gods. As societies became increasingly complex, personal hallucination as a guiding force in life declined in value, and modern consciousness was born. To make his case, Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, Hesiod, and the Bible are examined, ancient carvings and burial practices are considered, and the evolution of religious practices involving idols, sacrifices, prophecy, omens and divination are all looked at. They give support to Jaynes' contentions and open the mind of the reader. This is a book that keeps on giving.

Freedom is not free

I haven't read very many of the modern comic books (aka graphic novels), but I remember buying tons of them at the drugstore for a dime apiece when I was a kid in the 1950s. I decided to give "Radio Free Amerika #1" a go, and I enjoyed it. This episode serves as the prologue of a longer story, so it's mostly getting the reader up to speed with background stories and setting the stage for the action to come. The cover image of DJ Mose B., with a pistol in one hand and a microphone in the other, is a great visual representation of his role as both a combatant and a disk jockey leading a desperate struggle against the enemy who has taken over and occupied the United States. With several major American cities reduced to radioactive rubble, many Americans were dead or living in refugee camps. The situation was grim, but Americans were beginning to fight back. Carl Moses Benjamin, known as "Mose B," was a DJ before the war, and he's determined to use his hip hop DJ skills at his pirate radio station Radio Free Amerika to inspire Americans to fight the invaders.

Some of the other characters in the series were briefly introduced, but this issue is mainly about Mose B and his background. It looks like a suspenseful, action-filled series is in the works, so I've already downloaded Radio Free Amerika #2, which I'm looking forward to reading.

Her fate was to be determined by her parents and a matchmaker. From an early age, Xie rebelled against these circumstances. Despite her mother's scolding, she dared to venture outside to play with the boys, and she fought fiercely against having her feet bound. In this chronicle of the first 32 years of her life, gracefully translated by her daughter and son-in-law, Xie recounts her efforts to secure an education, escape from an arranged marriage, raise an infant while a single mother and, chiefly, forge political change in China as a soldier in the National Revolutionary Army fighting the warlords who dominated much of China in the 1920s, and against the Japanese in the 1930s. Drawn to the bohemian life, Xie scoffed at financial and physical security, and gloried in her image as a "warrior who opposes all feudal rule," even when her choices summoned hunger, loneliness and imprisonment. The happiest day of her early life, she recalls, was the day in 1928 when her War Diary was published. She went on to become a noted author of novels, other autobiographical works and essays. The efforts of women to emancipate themselves from restrictive social and family bonds is one of the central themes of modern Chinese history. A high degree of grit, intelligence, perseverance, and luck was required to succeed, particularly in the early decades of the 20th century. Xie Bingying had all those qualities in spades. Like a rocket escaping the pull of gravity, she hurtled from the remote village in central China where she was born in 1906 to a bohemian existence in urban China and eventually to a successful career as a teacher, essayist, novelist, and social activist. In 1927, she became a soldier in the Nationalist Army during its famous Northern Expedition. Born in 1906 in Xietuoshan, Xie Bingying demonstrated tenacity and decisiveness from a very early age despite the feudalistic Chinese society into which she was born. She was the daughter of a scholar and a traditional mother. Xie's feet were bound at the age of eight, and she was forced into an arranged marriage contract, but she would not allow any of these customs to tether her future. She sacrificed reputation, family, and love for the pursuit of books and literacy, and she threatened to kill herself if her needs were not met. Xie's unflinching character is demonstrated in her fearlessness as a soldier during Chiang Kai-shek's Northern Expedition and her zealous battle for truth and diplomacy in China. She was a tireless warrior on the front lines and a dedicated writer who endured poverty and endangered her life for propagation of the written word. As a potent feminist, she feared the vulnerability of love and its power to divert her from the path to enlightenment. Xie died in January of 2000 while her autobiography was being translated. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places

This is one of the most inspiring books I've read. Not only is Xie Bingying inspiring, but also the many selfless people whom she met and worked with. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places. I compliment her family on their translation of her account; the book makes me feel as though I know Xie. It has also given me a much better feel for the Chinese people. Her account describes the magnitude and pain of the people's struggle against oppressive traditions, and mixed into this simultaneously are the fights against invaders and the infighting of the Chinese revolutionary and political movements. The period seems almost to have been all the world's history wrapped up into a single generation in China.
