Excellent Collection of Vampire Short Fiction

This book is now old (first published in 1987), but is an excellent anthology of vampire stories from the early classics to the early 1980s. Included are seminal stories such as Polidori's "The Vampyre", and LeFanu's "Carmilla" as well as an excerpt from J.M. Rymer's massive serialized novel, "Varney the Vampyre". Some of the greatest vampire stories ever written are here, including Mary Elizabeth Braddon's "Good Lady Ducayne", E.F. Benson's "The Room In the Tower," M.R. James' "An Episode of Cathedral History," Fritz Leiber's "The Girl With the Hungry Eyes," August Derleth's "The Drifting Snow," and, most especially, F. Marion Crawford's "For the Blood is the Life". Famous mid-century writers like Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, and Robert Bloch are represented as are later authors like Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and Suzee McKey Charnas. My favorite of the latter selections is Tanith Lee's unique, fairy-tale-like, "Bite Me Not, or Fleur de Feu." Each story includes a short, but informative prologue introducing the author. I have a slight preference for "In the Shadow of Dracula," a more recent anthology that only includes stories up to about 1920; it is annotated with better biographical information that fits the stories in their historical context. Still, if you are a fan of vampire short fiction, "The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories" is a must-have.

This collection is a rarity in several sense, namely: -

1) Unlike similar heavy-named anthologies, this collection actually concentrates on packing a large no. of very good stories (including classics as well as almost unknown stories), from different authors who are very-very famous in their own fields, and thus creates an intense competition among themselves in the mind of the reader by having their differently styled (& themed) works placed side-by-side.
2) Most of the stories are very good, and collectively they cover nearly all kinds of 'vampirical' entities who can prey upon others (I would like to emphasise the 'prey' aspect, to differentiate them from the "Twilight"-sagan entities).

easy read

I'm not a fan of vampire stories, but I last-minute signed up for a vampire course at my university, thus leading to the purchase of this book. This book deals with the folk tales of vampires and literary vampires of similar types. It's totally different from the "Twilight" and "True Blood" kind of vampires, but I find it more likeable than those modern vampires. There are a number of stories inside this book and even if some are long, they are all easy reads. They are quite interesting and even provide author bios before each story. It's a pretty big book, but again, they are interesting and don't take long to read.

A great book that I first read almost 20 years ago. Swigart takes you on a surreal trip through the Silicon Valley of the late seventies and through ancient Sumeria. Poking fun at life, death, God and Computers, I recommend it for anyone with a warped sense of humour

I read Mr. Swigart's great sci-fi novel: "The Time Trip," because I wanted to see how it compared to my own sci-fi novel: "Time Trip on a Moebius Strip." Even though his novel was nothing like my own, I was completely amazed by his writing...Can this man write! His story is way out...He has this brillant computer scientist teleported to ancient Mesopotamia, 2642 B.C., looking for his wife who had committed suicide in a microwave oven, believe it or not...He then meets up with his wife in a former incarnation, who doesn't even know him, and who is working as a temple prostitute. She then introduces him to of all people, the king "Gilgamesh" who becomes his best friend...They have many adventures together...What happens after that you will have to read the book to find out....If you like sci-fi novels by Kurt Vonnegut, then the novels of Mr. Rob Swigart are right up your alley....

About the Author

Dr. Frederic (Ric) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. His publications include journal articles and contributed chapters, technical reports, and magazine articles. He is the lead author of six other undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, and has a feature column, “Back to Basics,” in Physician License and Practice Today, a quarterly publication for medical students and residents. He is currently affiliated faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and remains connected with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini has been active in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for 15 years, and was a member of the committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is now a President Emeritus of HAPS after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2004—2007. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Australia/New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Hawaii Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists.

Dr. Michael J. Timmons received his degrees from Loyola University, Chicago. For more than three decades he has had a strong commitment to teaching nursing and pre-professional students at Moraine Valley Community College. In 2005—2006 Professor Timmons was honored with the Professor of the Year Award by Moraine Valley College and the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development for his outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership, and student learning. He was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Illinois Community College Board of Trustees. Professor Timmons has authored several anatomy and physiology lab manuals and dissection guides. His areas of interest include biomedical photography, crafting illustration programs, and developing instructional technology learning systems. He chaired the Midwest Regional Human Anatomy and Physiology Conference and is also a national and regional presenter at the League for Innovation Conferences on Information Technology for Colleges and Universities and at Human Anatomy and Physiology Society meetings.

Dr. Robert B. Tallitsch received his Ph.D. in physiology with an anatomy minor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the ripe old age of 24. Since then, Dr. Tallitsch has been on the biology faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and Kinesiology. He is also a member of the Asian Studies faculty atAugustana College and teaches a course in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In seven out of the last nine years, Dr. Tallitsch has been designated as one of the “unofficial teachers of the year” by the graduating seniors at Augustana College. Dr. Tallitsch is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Association of Anatomists, AsiaNetwork, and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Augustana College, Dr. Tallitsch has served as a visiting faculty member at the Foreign Languages Faculty at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology (Beijing, PRC), and the Foreign Languages Faculty at Central ChinaNormalUniversity (Wuhan, PRC).

Anatomy & Physiology At Its Finest

I am currently using Marieb's 6th Edition text in my introductory Anatomy & Physiology course, and I couldn't have found a better aid had I tried. From cover to cover, this book is packed with a plethora of information. Though it may seem as if the book contains too much to take in upon first glance, the key is to read an average of about 7 pages a night and to take notes as you go along since each page is filled to the brim with detail and vocabulary. To put it simply, each chapter is about 30 - 45 pages long on average. Each page contains either a sea of vocabulary, diagrams of the human body, or oftentimes both. Aside from all of this, the fact that it is so in-depth (and sometimes complex with its scientific jargon) is what makes this book suitable for any anatomy class. The CD ROMs (if available w/ purchase) are also a great aid as well since they provide explinations focused on each individual topic in the chapter. There are also provided links to internet sites and quizzes to help sharpen your memory of difficult concepts. All in all, this book is nothing short of incredible, and will surely be helpful to anyone whether it be a college student or a student of a graduate school using it as a refresher. Very strongly recommended.

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

I bought the book the first time because I had to. I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing. Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester. MISTAKE! About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it.

If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it! What a marvelous book!

It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK!

Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want.

I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere!

The best LoveStories book ever written

I've read dozens of the LoveStories series, ever since I was a very young teen, and this one remains my absolute favorite. The first time I read it, I stayed up until four am until I had finished it, and it positively gave me tingles. I'm in college now, but still every time I read it (often!), I feel the same way. The characters of Dylan and Naomi have stuck with me for a long time. It was romantic, funny, and had a good plot-- I loved everything about the play they were doing. I have to admit, though I like them, the LoveStories books usually have a thin plot with only semi-memorable characters, but this book goes above and beyond the cliched teen romance. (Personally, I think it deserves a better title than How to Kiss A Guy, but I guess I can overlook that.) Way to go, Elizabeth Bernard!! I'm a fan for life!

Being who you want to be is hard.

I love How to Kiss a Guy. Naomi feels stuck. Everyone has her life planned out for her. But she's not sure anymore the life her friends expect her to live or that her parents want for her is what she wahts. She wants to be herself, whoever that is. She meets Dylan when she tries out for a play. Everyone she knows, her friends, her parents can't understand why she wants to be in a play, and why she likes a guy who rides a motorcycle. They act like she is becoming a bad girl. The title of the book makes it sound like a different kind of story than it is. Dylan and Naomi do kiss each other, a lot. But what I like about this book is how Naomi learns to stick up for herself, for what she wants and believes, no matter what anyone around her says or does or thinks.

Author portrays an often occurring problem, lying. Naomi Peters finds her world falling apart from all of her sneaking around and lying. Her grades are falling, her friends do not like who she has become, and her parents feel left out of her life. Finally she realizes the pain she has inflicted on some many people she cares about. After realizing how severe her life has turned upside down, she decides to come clean. I think this book is a good learning tool for teenagers today. Truth prevails

We conceived the idea for this book when we met at the Toronto Annual Quality Conference. We decided then to write a book about Dr. Deming's message. The book was to be simple to read yet introduce his philosophy in a completely accurate way. We planned to use copious illustrations to make the ideas clearer.

The purpose was to make the message easy to understand. We visualized an executive, flying home after a busy day, who wanted to use the time to study a new theory without undue strain.

Would Dr. Deming like the idea? We began to work on a manuscript and laid out the first chapter with an outline. This we gave to Dr. Deming. He sent this material back, edited and with a letter: "Your idea of a book is exciting. Please continue to work on it, and get it out."

Dr. Deming not only encouraged us but actively reviewed the manuscript and added his ideas. We believe this book represents the most simple, up-to-date, and accurate presentation of his philosophy.

This book is an ideal introduction to the Deming Management Theory. Its organization follows the four-day seminar made famous by Dr. Deming. Over the course of writing the book, Dr. Deming changed the order of presentation and of emphasis. In an early draft we included a table showing the order of a presentation he made only a week before. He wrote on this table, "We have to rethink this." Subsequently he adopted the format we now follow in this book. We like to think that we have had some influence on his presentation.

The book is an ideal study tool. Undergraduate and graduate courses of Management, Organizational Development, and Quality will benefit by using this book. The material of the seminar is presented in 13 chapters - an ideal content for a semester course. The list of questions at the end of the book is useful for studying and exploring the subject matter in depth.

While this book makes a useful text for university courses, it also fills a need as a study tool for in-house training. With appropriate changes in presentation, an instructor can use this book to train all levels of management and workers. The presentation avoids as much as possible the need for any technical knowledge. The authors are working on an instructional guide for in-house training.

Those who have attended Dr. Deming's seminars in the past will find the book to be a refresher of what they experienced. It may even clarify a point that was obscure at the time of the seminar.

For those who have never attended Dr. DemingIs seminar, this book gives the flavor of such an experience. To make people feel the forces at work during the seminar, we use three voices - first is Dr. Deming, who usually introduces the topic. Where we feel that we can contribute to understanding, the authors act as the second voice. An imaginary seminar participant is voice number three. The authors have much experience with the seminars, having acted often as facilitators for Dr. Deming. During this time we met many executives and managers who came to learn, impatient to get on with it but willing to listen. We have observed that changes in the seminar participant take place over time. The lesson of the beads is a particular point of change.

The epilogue was added to help people to continue to study the application of this philosophy. "There is no substitute for knowledge," said Dr. Deming. The best way to effect a transformation is with the help of a master. The authors recognize that there will be those who cannot find a master yet wish to continue studying the ideas. We give some advice that we hope will help these readers in their quest.

For a long time Dr. Deming kept saying that to manage in a competitive world requires Profound Knowledge. It was only in the last few years that he defined what he meant by Profound Knowledge. This book incorporates his most recent thinking on this important topic.

Why did we choose this format? We chose to use a nontraditional format because it is our theory that people learn in different ways. Some people are visual and can learn best when they see pictures. Others are more verbal and prefer to listen to lectures.

Traditional English text is one dimensional. A page really consists of a long line of words. (When read in one direction - left to right - this page is actually a 10-foot line of words.) Research suggests that the human brain converts information like a holograph, in three dimensions. For that reason, TVs, movies, and exhibits are popular ways of learning. Therefore, we have created this book specifically for those who prefer visual learning.

We chose to present the Four-Day Seminars in the landscape (wide page) format. Dr. Deming reviewed, corrected, and added to this manuscript. He liked the landscape format and hoped that it would appeal to the reader as well. Managing to achieve quality, by its very nature, requires the ability to see relationships. We have attempted to cross-reference the relationship between ideas whenever possible.

This book is the compilation of many of Dr. Deming's lectures. In attending many of these lectures, we observed his never-ending improvement - he constantly clarified his message and its delivery.

Dr. Deming's message to management is simple: The prevailing system of management is ruining us. The prevailing system focuses on short-term thinking, ranking, merit systems, management by results, quotas, and MBO's. The authors hope that by bringing Dr. Deming's message in this visual format we will help managers gain a better understanding of their jobs.

Every system, such as this book, must have an aim. Our aim is to present the Deming Seminar in a simple, enjoyable way that will give the reader understanding and desire to continue studying Dr. Deming's philosophy.

Ideal introduction to Deming's approach to management

One of few books about Deming actually endorsed by Deming himself - "It is a pleasure to commend this book to anyone for easy reading of the principles of management..." (Foreword). A step-by-step, practical introduction to the basics of Deming's management philosophy, far easier to read than Deming's own books, but not attempting to reach the depth of the system of profound knowledge outlined in "The New Economics." Of particular use to managers and students in understanding Deming, and to educators in preparing several famous demonstrations, including the Red Bead Experiment and the Funnel Experiment, with ample illustrations. This is not a lecture, but a self-paced "fun" substitute for "the real thing" (Deming's four-day seminars). Highly recommended.

authors add their comments. Portions of Deming's
seminar are legendary and the authors make you
believe you're there for the marble test. Deming
had approved this book and one of the authors had been
a facilitator for a number of Deming led seminars.

If you want an easy introduction to statistical control,
this is the book for you!

Charismatic testimony that is believable to a seeking but suspicious Christian

I met Dennis Bennett at a week long charismatic conference in San Jose, CA back in 1974. Although an ordained Episcopal priest, I had searched the New Testament back in 1972 and had determined that God intended a "Pentecostal" event for ALL Christians as a part of HIS definition of the "good news" of the gospel. At the end of that year, after three months of receiving prayer and the laying on of hands, God filled me with His Holy Spirit (after doing some serious "plowing" of my scholarly pride, my unforgiving attitudes and sins that for which I had not yet entered into what HE defined as repentance). I continued to be skeptical -- and still do -- of the reality of many Pentecostal claims, since I find them so ready to numerous numerous commands of Jesus and the apostles. But I found Dennis Bennett's story very believable. And when I met the man I was deeply impressed with his gentleness, good will and thoughtfulness. He was a VERY believable person, and I hope you will find his story to be believable enough for you to search the New Testament for yourself.

An engaging defence of IP that goes beyond mere utilitarianism

Sometimes you read a book and come away with more questions than answers. This book, which is beautifully written (why cannot all such academics write like this?) takes on the controversial subject of intellectual property. As demonstrated by recent legal spats involving the likes of Apple and Blackberry, IP is hardly a arcane matter just for lawyers and executives - it affects all of us. We live in the age of file-sharing; we can download books, films and other material in seconds. Meanwhile, the issue of patents has become an international hot issue due to demands from peoples in poor countries for access to patent-free drugs to deal with HIV, TB and other killers diseases and conditions.

First of all, on the positive side, Merges is to be congratulated for defending IP in a way that goes far beyond the usual utilitarian, consequentialist arguments that are made in defence of IP. (That is not to say that he ignores those arguments out of hand). He realises that for some critics of IP, the issues are as much matters of ethics as they are of material benefit. So, in an interesting exercise, he seeks, not always convincingly, to knit together the ideas of Locke, Rawls and Kant to build an ethical foundation for IP, both in terms of justifying the rights of individuals to "propertise" their labour, while also using these men's ideas to justify restrictions on certain forms of IP (such as when he writes about waivers, or proportionality), and to justify things such as redistributive methods to ameliorate what are seen as cases where IP rights give "too much" benefit to an IP holder.

Merges also deserves credit for seeking to show that even if one does not accept all of his lower-level, foundational defences for IP (Locke and Co), that there are important "mid-level" arguments to use for IP. In particular, he goes to a fair amount of effort to show how IP actually benefits individual creators/inventors, often in ways that might not be apparent to critics of IP who claim that IP only benefits Big Business. I thought this was the best part of the book.

This is certainly one of the more impressive defences of IP I have read, not least because Merges has pitched his arguments as much against the anti-IPers on the egalitarian left like Larry Lessig as he has against the anti-IPers on the libertarian side, such as Tom Palmer of CATO or Stephan Kinsella at the Mises Institute. But for all the strengths of this book, there are several areas that require more work.

First, Merges seeks to justify IP by talking about how a creator has a "core" of "desert" for his/her work that justifies IP, while there is also a periphery of socially-created forces that enable a person to create IP in the first place. While a nice theory (I think the desert issue is well worth making), it is very difficult to see how in practice one can distinguish between the value a person, such as a novelist, creates by his/her own efforts and will (the core) and the value that comes from say, having a good education, or living in a house full of books, or whatever (the periphery).

Related to this contentious issue of "desert", Merges approvingly cites in the notes a criticism of the ideas of libertarian philosopher Robert Nozick. (Nozick wrote a powerful attack on John Rawls' ideas in the 1970s). Nozick once famously wrote of how, if people all started off from the same wealth distribution, and paid a few cents to watch their favourite basketball star, Wilt Chamberlain, that Wilt C. would end up very rich from such free exchange. This argument - which is often used to show how socialism can interfere with freedom - has been criticised on the grounds that someone like Wilt Chamberlain does not "deserve" all his/her talents and hence it is wrong that such a person should be paid in full, even though the payments are non-coerced. Merges seems to approve of this argument, and does not really seek to unpick it.

But this argument is mistaken. Consider this: if a sports star, actress or whoever does not fully "deserve" their talents from which they can earn a good living in a free market, then why do we not also reflect that the people who pay a few pounds to see or hear these people also don't "deserve" to live in a world where such brilliant people work? And yet this question is often never asked by those who argue that the State, or "community" has some sort of claim on the "undeserved" wealth that a person has. I don't deserve my good looks and smart mind, but then again, you don't deserve the fruits of it, either. The idea of us deserving or not deserving high IQs, wealth, physical dexterity etc comes from the idea that some sort of Creator has bestowed these things upon us by a deliberate act of will. But unless one is religious, this argument does not follow.

This might seem a bit of a long digression but it is a serious flaw in the book, or at least this argument about desert needs to be considered in more detail when desert is used to justify IP. Redistributive justice relies on a lot of assumptions - as in the case of the ideas of John Rawls - that have been subjected to a lot of serious criticism from the likes of Nozick, FA Hayek, and many others. And yet although Merges is clearly aware of these criticisms, he tends not to give a great deal of space for them. In fact, he treats Rawls' controversial idea of a presumption in favour of equality as if it were a self-evident truth.

Another weakness in the book is that one of the strongest defenders of IP in recent years, Ayn Rand, is not mentioned at all. Neither are others influenced by her ideas, such as Adam Mossoff. This is s shame because Rand defended IP, very vigorously, on the grounds that, ultimately, all property - including physical property (or what economists call excludable goods) is intellectual property. All moves to take the stuff of nature and make it usable to Man is an intellectual effort, aimed at furthering human survival and flourishing through mental as well as physical labour. This fits quite well with some of the things that Merges says about Locke's and Kant's defences of property (which is ironic given that Rand famously criticised Kant's duty-based ethics).

In general, I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an engaging book about IP and who is prepared to be taken a bit out of their mental comfort zones. I felt the book could have explored some issues in more detail, and I hope that the author continues to play an important role in the debate about IP. My criticisms in no way detract from what I regard as a noble and intelligent defence of IP in some respects. It deserves to be taken seriously.

Excellent book for the theory and practical application of intellectual property

As the title claims, the purpose of this book is to provide a justification for intellectual property. In contrast to much of the work in this area, however, Justifying Intellectual Property does not build its case solely on economic or utilitarian grounds. Instead, the author attempts to make the ethical case for IP, arguing that these rights run deeper and are more fundamental than the conventional view of IP rights as policy tools to spur innovation. To support this contention, the author brings in a significant amount of material from Locke, Kant, and Rawls to build his case. The first chapters of this book deal with these somewhat dense philosophical questions, but the later chapters move toward what the author refers to as "mid-level principles", the principles that are more familiar to those acquainted with IP. These include efficiency and proportionality among others. The author, however, does not abandon the ethical foundation laid in the first chapters. He builds upon it, incorporating these mid-level principles into his model and then, in the final chapters, addressing more contemporary issues in IP.

The scope of this book is immense, and the first several chapters can be a bit daunting. If you have the requisite stamina though, the payoff is enormously satisfying, presenting a comprehensive and firmly rooted model for IP. In the end, the challenge to dig deeper for IP's foundations is perhaps the most important takeaway. I highly recommend it.
