Hapgood's long out of print book is now available

We owe David Hatcher Childress a huge vote of thanks for reprinting Hapgood's long out of print study of one of the most curious archaeological mysteries of the last century. Sometime in the late 1940s, Waldemar Julsrud, a German living in the small Mexican town of Acambaro, stumbled upon a strange clay figurine protruding from the earth. Within days, a barrow-load of similar clay sculptures was delivered to him by a man who was recovering dozens of them from the excavation of his basement nearby. Subsequent testing suggests they were made between 3,500-6,400 years before the present but correspond to no known ancient culture. This heresy is made worse by the strangeness of the figures, many showing humans co-existing with huge lizards and Godzilla-like dinosaurs. The establishment has shunned the case, but it deserves to be better studied. The story might never have become known if the case had not been investigated by Hapgood (author of Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings) and crime-writer Earle Stanley Gardner. The original pamphlet is only about 20 pages; half the rest are old (rather poor) photos of the enigmatic sculptures and half is a long essay by Childress reviewing evidence of dinosaur survival into the era of modern man.

Challenging, controvsersial, thought-provoking reading.

Mystery In Acambaro is a detailed and illustrated account of an unusual collection of ceramic figures discovered and assembled by the late Waldemar Julsrud in Acambaro, Mexico. If authentic, some of the figures would seem to indicate that dinosaurs survived in that part of the world into fairly recent times. This clay figures depict bizarre animals and scenes that don't fit neatly into traditional archaeology and paleontology theory, and therefore have been sumarily dismissed by mainstream scholarship as an elaborate hoax. But both Hapgood and Earle Stanley Gardner were convinced that the Acambaro figures were authentic artifacts, with very important implications for our understanding of dinosaurs and Central American human history. Highly recommended, challenging, controversial, very thought provoking reading.

Not Quite What Was Expected

As mentioned in the title, this book was not quite what was expected. The introduction by Childress was equivalent in length to Hapgood's portion, and contained little new information. It also contained some misinformation about the Zuiyo-maru carcass.
As for Hapgood's portion, a more complete analysis of the mystery figures was expected. The presentation was quite generic with few specific examples of the reasoning behind his belief thst dinosaurs survived until recently.

Not just an Atlas! Absolutely Exquisite!

Since I am a visual learner, I have bought a lot of medical atlases in human and veterinary medicine over the years. They usually contain excellent color photos like this one but with only a short caption describing just what's in the image. This one however has a series of photos related to a case example of each condition which is briefly, but amply described in several paragraphs labeled Patient Story, Introduction, Epidemiology, Etiology & Pathophysiology, Clinical & Laboratory Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, Management, Followup, Patient Education & Resources, Provider Resources, and References. For me, a far better name for this book would be "Internal Medicine Atlas / Encyclopedia". It's well worth the price.

The Color Atlas of Internal Medicine has been an excellent addition to my clinical practice. I use it regularly as a quick reference and as a teaching tool while instructing residents. The format is consistent and concise. The index allows for rapid access of information. I am reassured by the frequent references and levels of evidence. The digital images are integrated in a way that artfully links pathology to diagnosis and treatment. The editors have truly created a well-rounded and accessible resource. It most definitely met my expectations!

Its a great book with ample amount of images and a very good explanation and therapeutics about diseases. Although, there are limited diseases but majority are present or at least the most common that are seen in the clinics. Definitely recommend the book whether just as a collector of atlases or for fun reading or as reference.

Great book/controversial topic

Mnookin's book provides a comprehensive look at the history of public vaccination campaigns in the US and abroad. His examination starts as far back as smallpox and moves into other more recent vaccines such as MMR and DPT. The book gives the reader some insight into how vaccine programs were mishandled in the past, leading to public outcry over the safety of the vaccines. It then connects these public oppositions to the greater public suspicion regarding the overall intention of government vaccine programs.
Overall this book is very informative and even humorous at times. Mnookin presents both sides of the vaccination spectrum- those who are completely opposed and those who wholeheartedly support. He does a great job of explaining how certain groups of individuals could ignore current scientific data on vaccines in favor of listening to fringe doctors who appeal to their emotions. Autism research is discussed in great detail and there are several moving stories and families affected first hand by autism.
I found Panic Virus to be very timely considering the news coverage given to relentless anti-vaccine groups in the U.S. For someone like myself who finds it difficult to deny scientific evidence, the book gave me insight into the tactics of anti-vaccine groups. I can now see how a parent desperately searching for answers as to how their child became suddenly autistic.

I like how the author began the story

As I began reading, I was absolutely captivated by the introduction. It speaks about a mother who chose not to vaccinate her child, and the consequences of this choice. As a parent, I could relate to her situation of feeling helpless to do anything as she sat with her child in the hospital. I like how the author began the story, and then split into giving information about anti-vaccine activists movements. I like how he spoke about how the decision was more emotion based, the logically based on facts in Science. The introduction really pulled me into the book, and I was eager to continue reading. The Part One, was the easiest section to follow which went over the fast history of several disease's that there are vaccination's for now. Part 2 & 3, were a little bit harder for me to keep up with and read. The discussion was mainly over the mercury in vaccines, and Autism. The biggest part of the book was whether or not vaccines cause Autism. The author clearly shows that there is no Scientific evidence that shows that Autism is linked to children getting vaccines. I really liked the way the author showed both sides of the issues thoroughly, and not just his perspective. I really enjoyed learning about the histories and learned a lot of information that I didn't know. The most profound thing I noticed is how one person can seriously affect the public a whole, whether or not there theories are true. Overall, I think it was a really good book, i'm really glad that I chose this book.

A good read for a boring subject. Definitely timely for understanding the real pros and cons of vaccines and the mass hysterias caused by their use.
