Two boys venture into the space/time continuum to rescue a prized first edition Superman comic.
Twelve-year-old Brian will never forget the day, when he was seven, that he accidentally spilled a cup of punch on his father's valuable copy of a Superman #1 comic book from 1939. He is certain that his cheerful, joking father secretly despises him for ruining this prized possession. Like his father, Brian collects comic books, so it is not surprising when Mr. Somerset, the owner of the General Store, gives one to Brian. What is surprising, however, is that the comic book is full of blank panels and that a metal ring falls into Brian's lap. Brian thinks that there must be some kind of mistake. Why would anyone want to buy a blank comic book?
Paul, Brian's best friend, activates the ring, sets the date to 75 million B.C., and then presses a button labeled "Timequest." The boys suddenly find themselves in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean battling a prehistoric beast. This wet adventure becomes the first of many "Timequests" -- both to the past and to the future. During their travels, they escape from 1939 to find themselves in the prehistoric past where they get caught in a battle between a mastodon and a pack of dire wolves. They warp away just in time, but one problem leads to another. When they finally make their way back home they find that though they have been changed by their adventures, home is comfortably the same ... or is it?

Gr 4-6-Brian and Paul, 12, are the comic-book kings of the school with a combined collection of over 5000 mint-condition superhero books. Brian is particularly aware of the potential value of comics since he once accidentally destroyed his father's valuable Superman #1. The two friends are excited when the owner of their favorite store presents them with a brand-new title, TimeQuest. They discover that all the panels are blank except for a note on the last page describing how to use the comic as a time machine. Of course, they're sure it's all a joke until Paul accidentally triggers a quick, dangerous jaunt back to dinosaur times. Brian then decides to use the device to go back to 1939 and replace his dad's lost treasure. Unfortunately, the TimeQuest technology is unreliable at best, and the boys are suddenly off on a wild time-hopping odyssey. They are attacked by prehistoric cave dwellers, trapped by futuristic aliens, and lost in the far future. To make things worse, they pick up a companion in 1939, a girl who will be Brian's grandmother. The TimeQuest book panels fill in their adventures as they try to retrieve the Superman issue, avoid changing history, and get back to their own era alive. This lighthearted science-fiction story has plenty of quick action. The dialogue is crisp and natural with an abundance of middle school humor. There's also a subtle message about responsibility and friendship.

Brian has always felt guilty because as a little kid he destroyed his father's valuable Superman comic book So when he and his friend Paul are presented with a magic ring that can take them back and forth in time, Brian wants to go to 1939 and get Superman #1. Naturally, things don't work out quite that easily. This book has more than a passing resemblance to Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's Time Warp Trio series, but it's not as well plotted or funny. It does have one section, however, that is kid-appealingly gross. This is not an essential purchase, but it might please Trio fans waiting for the next Scieszka/Smith installment. Pen-and-ink illustrations by Craig Smith capture the whirling dervish feeling that pervades the story. Ilene Cooper

Excellent Independent Reading Choice

I've used this book all year as an independent reading choice in my 6th grade clasroom. It really draws in even the most reluctant reader. The kids like the combination of time travel, comic books, aliens, prehistoric monsters, etc.--just about everything a kid would want in a book. My personal favorite scene is when Brian falls out of the alien spaceship and realizes his corduroy pants had saved him, and they're NOT damaged! Very funny stuff. I think adults will enjoy the book too.

Disney Award Winner!

I highly recommend this book. It won the Walt Disney award for Best Adventure Book (a CHILDREN'S CHOICE award). It's about a boy who tries to get a valuable comic book in mint-condition from 1939 and ends up going on a wild journey. The boy's motives are unselfish, having to do with bringing love back into his family (I won't give anything away).
In a time when all sorts of violent and inappropriate things are starting to appear in children's books in the misguided belief that they are required to keep today's kids reading, it's good to see a wholesome adventure book with family values. That it was chosen by the children of America as the best adventure book speaks volumes about what will actually keep kids reading: a good, solid, page-turning adventure that doesn't stop even after you've closed the book at the end.
The illustrations are also spectacular. They are the old-fashioned kind made up of thousands of individual lines, giving the impression that each is an intricate etching. They fit the comic book theme of the novel nicely. An impressive 5 star book.

Best Adventure book ever

I read this book because its up for best adventure book in the disney adventures awards. Its neat because it only took me three hours to read. I usually read 25 pages an hour and this book is 150 pages so it goes fast. Theres no place to put it down and go get a drink because its all adventure. I'm going to vote for it. Read this book if you want to go an action packed journey to get an old comic book.
