I don't want it to sound like I'm kissing a#@, but this was a really great series. Liam is the kind of guy you want to walk out on but can't, because he is in your blood. I loved when he told her that he would always look around for because he knew that she was there, and when she wasn't, it made him angry. That is probably my favorite scene in the series.

Finally a Dom/sub relationship where them falling in love at the end is totally believable. I freaking loved these books. I read the whole set in about two hours with no break I was so hooked. I really really wish their was a cute little excerpt of like, their wedding or their married life or even having kids though at the very end.

I really enjoyed this series. Liam is the kind of dominant male you want to hate, but can't help loving! Madeline is a confused, loving woman who doesn't want to love Liam again but is addicted to him and gives her heart and body to him completely. Makes me want to find out what is in their future!

The concluding installment of Lingeman's ( Small Town Americasic ) two-volume biography finds Dreiser (1871-1945) employed in midlife as an editor at Butterfield Publications, having published his first novel, Sister Carrie --but not for long. The literary renegade abruptly left wife and job to sweat it out as a writer in New York's Greenwich Village, subsisting on little but ambivalent critical notices until the tidal-wave success of An American Tragedy . Lingeman, executive editor of the Nation , immerses himself in the history of the American left to make sense of Dreiser's engagement with Stalinism and with the Communist flank of American syndicalism, discovering considerable political astuteness in Dreiser's partisan activity. This portrait, based on letters and journals, shows a clearer thinker than is usually conveyed by Dreiser's reputation as a curmudgeon unable to pen a navigable sentence. Lingeman avoids simple assessment, forging beyond Freudian cliches in considering Dreiser's sexual identity, with its simultaneous striving for freedom and stability. On the whole, his is an undeluded, jargon-free biography which finds much to admire in both the man and his work. Photos not seen by PW.

Judicious and basically sympathetic, this final volume of Lingeman's two-volume work (following Theodore Dreiser: At the Gates of the City, 1871-1907 , Putnam, 1986) should supersede W.A. Swanberg's Dreiser ( LJ 3/15/65). Able to reconcile contrarieties in Dreiser's personality, Lingeman is particularly good in detailing Dreiser's run-ins with censors and publishers, his uneasy alliance/friendship with Mencken, his use of the Gillette-Brown murder case in An American Tragedy , his compulsive affairs with younger women, and his unflagging search for purpose in an apparently chaotic universe. This lively volume offers us not only the artist at the height of his powers, but, finally, the man who spent the last 20 years of his life worrying fruitlessly about a host of social, political, and metaphysical problems. Essential.

Unbelievable story

Once in awhile, a book comes along and changes your perspective of what one person can accomplish despite the rules. This is a testament to Eunice Chapman's extraordinary commitment, endurance, and faith. I applaud Ilyon Woo's extensive research and meticulous detail to capture the story from multiple points of view. She managed to capture each main character in their true light as both aggressor and victim. It is a brilliant story and one that every book club group should read.

I am a history junkie. I especially enjoy works that give a rich, full flavor of a time as well as presenting different views of the same event. This book delivers nicely on both counts, relating the atmosphere in New York State and the country in the early 1800's, especially in regards to religion, the condition of women, and women's rights. The centerpiece is one womans battle to regain her children, who had been spirited away by her husband. At a time when a woman had little recourse against those that harmed or mistreated her, Eunice Chapmans battle was an amazing one. What could have been a small family drama escalated into a war that caught up politicians, lawyers, the Shaker religion and such luminaries as Martin Van Buren and Thomas Jefferson.

All that aside, the author makes the book highly accessible to the reader, writing in an engaging style that makes this a page-turning historical mystery. It is just plain great storytelling!

WONDERFUL RICHLY TOLD TALE

I love a well written book and the language here is like a fine meal, something to savor. Ilyon Woo has woven ample research into the fabric of this story, so we can see our country in the early 19th century and see the people. This is a tale for parents to read and marvel at the commitment of one mother to her children, and for young women to read and marvel at how true feminism is about so much more than current rhetoric minimalizes. I do not doubt that THE GREAT DIVORCE will soon be a part of women studies curriculums at our finest colleges. Every women should read this remarkable tale to remind ourselves how far we've come, and that real women make waves and then ride them ashore, they don't drown in them.

A Satisfying Conclusion to the Insanely Epic Series

Charlie West woke up one morning to find himself being tortured by terrorists with absolutely no memory of what happened during the last year of his life. And, to make it worse, he's wanted by the police for the murder of his best friend. Over the next couple of months, Charlie is faced with a ridiculous amount of misfortune on his quest to clear his name and expose his would-be murderers.

I'm actually starting to think Andrew Klavan is incapable of writing a boring scene. Practically every sentence is packed to bursting with suspense. From a dogfight through the streets of New York to dodging subway trains in a shootout with the Homelanders, Klavan never lets up on the thrills.

And now, it's finally over. The final hour has come and gone, answering every question; revealing every mystery. Every fan of the previous books will need to get their hands on this truly satisfying conclusion to the insanely epic series.

Exciting and Thought Provoking Throughout

I've really enjoyed Klavan's Homelanders Series and this final book is an excellent end to a suspenseful and action-packed story. Teen super-hero Charlie West is in one of the most dangerous prisons in the country for a crime he didn't commit. And amidst his struggle to stay alive in prison, he is also one of the only people left with knowledge of an upcoming terrorist attack on America. He struggles through his fear and circumstances in order to save the people in this creative and fantastic adventure.

Each book in this series brings a piece of the mystery and character of Charlie West. It's not a "deep" story so much as it is action-packed, but many important issues are brought up in the realms of faith, politics, violence, war and terrorism, patriotism, good versus evil, and even identity. As a mother, this is the kind of story I'd want to discuss with my teenagers after each book, and I am pleased that The Final Hour does have a Reading Group Guide for further reflection.

I picked up the first book at a thrift store, I read it in a day. My son picked it up and did the same. I couldn't stop reading it. I went online and ordered the entire set. Now that was great. I read them so fast. But the delay in waiting to find out what happened next drovecrazy. This is a good series for adults and pre teens.

Their descendants moved northwards in cohorts of Kinsmen that conquered and settled portions of the rain forests, resulting in a cascading formation of twenty-two clans with distinct subcultures. Olomu stands out among these due to its central location in Western Niger Delta and has ample linkages with several sub-cultures of Urhoboland, neighbouring Isoko, and Western Ijaw. In Ancient times, Olomu was exceptionally prolific in serving as the origin of four major sub-cultures in northern Urhobo and northern Isoko. Moreover during the early decades of British colonial rule in the 20th century, Olomu played a significant role in the development of Urhoboland. For these reasons, Olomu has been used as a handle for examining the patterns of development of Urhoboland and Western Niger Delta they are presented in this monograph.

This is the most original, most authentic, most well reasoned account of the origin of the Urhobo people that I have ever read. The book is very well researched and written. An excellent book for researchers and students of Urhobo history and the development of the Western Niger Delta.

James Ashcroft is a former British Infantry Captain who served in West Belfast and Yugoslavia, and trained with various elite U.S. Army and Marine Units. Taking Care of Friends

This is the sequel to "Making A Killing" in which Ash and some of his contractor buddies return to Baghdad to help their interpreter "Sammy".Sammy has been put on a Shia death list and must leave the city with his family.I will leave it at that so that I do not give away anything in the book. Trust me, you will enjoy the hell out of this sequel.
Along the way, we are reintroduced to Colonel "Mad Dog" McQueen and his assistant Tanya.This book has all of the action and then some that MAK had.You will also read about an ambush in which Col. McQueen participated in and should have been awarded the Medal of Honor or at least the DSC because of his heroism.
I would like to compliment CPT Ashcroft because he took the royalties from the first book and donated them to Sammy and his family. This is a must read for anyone who has an interest in current military affairs or just want a damn good read.

A Solid Sequel

A very good sequel, this story is focused on Ash and some of his Spartan colleagues returning to Baghdad to assist Sammy (if you don't know then I advise you to read the first book, "Making a Killing:). This account, like that in MAK, vividly depicts Baghdad as it is today and why, despite things "improving," a lot of work needs to be done. Ironically, after reading this book, a friend recently returned from a tour in Iraq was discussing the Sunni "Awakening" and the problems it's caused; I was the only one to understand some of these issues because of this book, and upon describing some details, was informed that Escape from Baghdad relates some very accurate information in its telling. A great story that is worth telling, insightful and in between the moments that rivet you you might find yourself laughing at some of the interactions, as well.

Courage at its Finest

James Ashcroft, and some of his Spartan team mates from Making a Killing, return to Iraq to escort Sammy, their interpreter (and friend), and his family safely to Jordan.

This read has plenty of action and suspence, from a car chase, to fire fights, and eluding corrupt Iragi Police. This book was hard to put down.

Ash and his team mates are professionals who put their lives on the line, not for financial gain, but for a friend in need. Great read!

About the Author
Lal Krishna Advani s political journey began in 1951, when Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Jana Sangh. The party s ideologue and Chief Organiser, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, was a major influence on his ideology and idealism. Advani was elected President of the Jana Sangh in 1973 and incarcerated in jail for nineteen months during the Emergency. Advani was the Information & Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party government in 1977-1979 and has served as the President of the BJP for the longest period. He was India s Home Minister (1998- 2004) and Deputy Prime Minister (2002-2004) in the Vajpayee government. A Member of Parliament since 1970, and recepient of the Award for Outstanding Parliamentarian , he is currently Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

An overview of (modern) Indian political history

This book is an exceptional compendium of the post-1947 history of (the Republic of) India. As far as the biography genre goes, it is neither as personal as Boswell, nor as humorous as Rousseau, and lacks the romantic-artistic insights of Berlioz. But then the author is no artist; instead one learns of a true patriot's efforts to serve his country. This account is unique, not only because of its broad perspective (it belongs to an Indian politician of unimpeachable integrity, who speaks at least three languages, has worked across the breadth of a country as diverse as Europe and has been involved in the history of India since its re-creation last century) but also because it is that of a true democrat. There is nothing of the romance of Hemmingway's fighter in Spain, or of the fiery youths who courted execution by Imperial Britain: but their passion is here reflected, played out instead over five decades of nation-building.

Especially for Indians who grew up in urban India in the 1980s and 1990s, with politics dominated by the Congress (I) and public opinion moulded by English-language print-media, this autobiography is vital, for it fearlessly looks at major historical and political milestones, starting with the partition of India, the assassination of Gandhi, the 1962 "border incident", the prevalence of corrupt politicians, dynasty politics, cultural identity, the tyrannical Emergency of the 70s, the Ram temple, market reform, nuclear testing, terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir and foreign relations, with a focus on immediate neighbours: military dictatorships in Pakistan, the Kargil war, the 1971 birth of Bangladesh and increasing trade with China.

Apart from two typographical (?) errors (Herold, instead of Harold, for a PM of GB; sic. for sic) and a surprising condemnation of a learned patriot early on, the photographs could have been better arranged, and graphs and visual devices used to reinforce historical timeline, especially given that the memoirs of contemporary politicians are often regarded as text-books.

I recommend this work to any student of Indian politics, economics or society, to everyone who loves India, and to any one who despises her; but mostly to those Indians who might have given up hope for their country.

A Bold Effort

Advani has done the country an enormous service in setting a trend of writing political memoirs. I hope other political leaders do it as honestly (some call it boldly) as he has done. Sure, there was a little touch of presenting himself as good but that is only natural in any autobiography.

What is commendable is that he did not hesitate from touching upon the controversial subjects esp. when his political career is still active.
The book also takes us through a wonderful journey of a political activist sticking to his convictions despite victories, defeats and opportunities. His candid assessment of loss of morals within his own party is truly admirable. I am not a person who reads books. This is my first book of over 300 pages and I've read it in less than four days. Such a gripping story it was!

India is indebted to a politician like him who single-handedly responsible for taking it from a democratic monarchy to a bipolar democracy. We hope he will succeed in making this country a strong, secure, and a morally correct model for the world.

A must for every Indian's political education

`My Country, My Life' is the memoirs of one of contemporary India's most senior, charismatic and controversial politicians who at eighty, is as active in political life as he was six decades ago when he began his career as a swayamsevak of the RSS.

Advani has been the chief ideologue of the right wing, BJP - the party which has grown from a mere two Parliamentary seats in 1984, to the single largest party in 1996, and to its crowing glory of leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre, which was India's first non-Congress government to last its full term in power.

The book spanning almost 1000 pages is immensely readable even for a political novice due to its intrinsic jargon-free nature. The clarity of thought and idea is impressive. He discusses controversial issues and political opponents with a great degree of calmness and poise.

Although some critics have claimed that Advani's book is an exercise in image makeover, there is nothing in the book to suggest this idea, as there is no deviation on fundamental issues from his publically-stated position. This is a much welcome work as it puts in black and white the position of the mainstream Hindu right. In the absence of a written record of the official position, it has often been grossly misinterpreted - sometimes in plain ignorance by many western academicians, but mostly willfully by politically-motivated, Hindu-hating, leftist ideologues.

Advani in discussing pivotal episodes of India's last 50 years from partition, to the age of the Nehruvian blunders consummating in the Sino Indian War, the emergency raj of Indira and its resistance from jail, leading free India's largest mass movement in Ayodhya, making India nuclear, fighting the pseudosecular Muslim appeasing anti-national parties of India, the myths and truths of Godhra has them accurately represented, quite in contrast to the academically dishonest methods of those leftist-marxists like Bipin Chandra and Ramachandra Guha whose ideological servitude involves them frequently indulging in half truths and bowdlerizations.

All in all, this book is not only an immensely readable first-person account of the events, ideas, and influences that have shaped the political life of one of independent India's most senior politicians, but only an insightful insider's analysis of the political events and decisions that have determined the destiny of India right from the dawn of independence to the present times.

About the Author
Leanne Fiftal Alarid is an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas-El Paso. She double majored in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Northern Colorado. She worked in Denver as a counselor in a girls group home and then as a case manager at an adult halfway house before returning to school to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. She was on the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1996-2006, and at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2006-2013. Her research areas are post-conviction offender behavior, issues of mentally ill offenders, and correctional policy. She has also partnered with a number of criminal justice agencies as a researcher, consultant, and program evaluator. Dr. Alarid has authored more than fifty journal articles and book chapters. She has co-authored/edited seven other books and received the Fellow Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 2011 for her outstanding contribution to criminal justice education and service.

Rolando V. del Carmen is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He was assistant dean and associate professor of a school of law in the Philippines and has held various administrative and academic positions in the United States. In addition, he has taught at various universities and has written extensively, including numerous articles on legal issues and more than ten books. A consultant to criminal justice agencies in a number of states, Dr. Del Carmen served a six-year term to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. He earned the Fellow Award (1990), Bruce Smith Award (1996), and Founders Award (2005) from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He holds a B.A. and a bachelor of laws degree from the Philippines, a master of comparative law from Southern Methodist University, a master of laws from the University of California at Berkeley, and a doctor of science of law from the University of Illinois.
