Escape from Baghdad, by James Ashcroft, Clifford Thurlow

The gripping truestory of James Ashcroft’s audacious return to war-torn Iraq to save his friendThe Mission: Get in. Rescue an entire family from death on teh streets of Baghdad. Get everyone out alive. The Pay: Saving the life of a friend. In James Ashcroft’s first book, Making a Killing, his escape from death at the hands of insurgents in Iraq was thanks to the bravery of his interpreter and friend Sammy, a Sunni ex-Iraqi air force pilot. Now, a call for help means Ash must take a break from chasing pirates in West Africa and return to the chaos of war-torn Baghdad. Abandoned by the occupying Coalition Forces and at the mercy of the Shia-dominated Iraqi police, Sammy and his family face certain death unless Ash and his crack team can get in and quickly rescue them. From secretly acquiring weapons on the black market to dodging the fearsome death squads that roam the streets and the suicide bombers that wreak havoc on a daily basis, this is the story of a vulnerable family adrift in the chaos of war, where the only thing that can be relied upon is the bond between former brothers-in-arms. And this time, these guns-for-hire who come with a hefty price tag aren’t even being paid—this time, it’s personal.

"Genuinely terrifying ... edge-of-the seat stuff" News of the World --News of the World

Nuggets of political insight are woven through this page-turning adventure that is head and shoulders above the other military memoirs hitting the shelves," London Lite --London Lite

"A page-turner that will hold the attention of most military readers, it is also a heart-warming tale of how military comradeship transcends money and nationality." Warbooks Review --Warbooks Review

"A genuinely terrifying insight into how execution squads now stalk Baghdad targeting people who helped the coalition forces ... An encounter with a suicide bomber is truly harrowing but Ashcroft somehow manages to blend stark realism with gallows humour ... Edge of the seat stuff." News of the World "Readers who like big guns and adrenaline-buzzed adventure will love the second outing for Ashcroft and co-writer Clifford Thurlow ... Nuggets of political insight are woven through this page-turning adventure that is head and shoulders above the other military memoirs hitting the shelves" London Lite

Taking Care of Friends
By Jeffrey S. Barrett
This is the sequel to "Making A Killing" in which Ash and some of his contractor buddies return to Baghdad to help their interpreter "Sammy".Sammy has been put on a Shia death list and must leave the city with his family.I will leave it at that so that I do not give away anything in the book. Trust me, you will enjoy the hell out of this sequel.
Along the way, we are reintroduced to Colonel "Mad Dog" McQueen and his assistant Tanya. This book has all of the action and then some that MAK had.You will also read about an ambush in which Col. McQueen participated in and should have been awarded the Medal of Honor or at least the DSC because of his heroism.
I would like to compliment CPT Ashcroft because he took the royalties from the first book and donated them to Sammy and his family. This is a must read for anyone who has an interest in current military affairs or just want a damn good read.

A Solid Sequel
By Jack Haber
A very good sequel, this story is focused on Ash and some of his Spartan colleagues returning to Baghdad to assist Sammy (if you don't know then I advise you to read the first book, "Making a Killing:). This account, like that in MAK, vividly depicts Baghdad as it is today and why, despite things "improving," a lot of work needs to be done. Ironically, after reading this book, a friend recently returned from a tour in Iraq was discussing the Sunni "Awakening" and the problems it's caused; I was the only one to understand some of these issues because of this book, and upon describing some details, was informed that Escape from Baghdad relates some very accurate information in its telling. A great story that is worth telling, insightful and in between the moments that rivet you you might find yourself laughing at some of the interactions, as well.

Courage at its Finest
By Todd C. Heins
James Ashcroft, and some of his Spartan team mates from Making a Killing, return to Iraq to escort Sammy, their interpreter (and friend), and his family safely to Jordan.

This read has plenty of action and suspence, from a car chase, to fire fights, and eluding corrupt Iragi Police. This book was hard to put down.

Ash and his team mates are professionals who put their lives on the line, not for financial gain, but for a friend in need. Great read!
