About the Author
Wayne Weiten is a graduate of Bradley University and received his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1981. He has taught at the College of DuPage and Santa Clara University, and currently teaches at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has received distinguished teaching awards from Division Two of the American Psychological Association (APA) and from the College of DuPage. He is a Fellow of Divisions 1, 2, and 8 of the American Psychological Association and a Fellow of the Midwestern Psychological Association. In 1991, he helped chair the APA National Conference on Enhancing the Quality of Undergraduate Education in Psychology. He is a former President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. In 2006, one of the five national teaching awards given annually by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology was named in his honor. Weiten has conducted research on a wide range of topics, including educational measurement, jury decision-making, attribution theory, pressure as a form of stress, and the technology of textbooks. He is also the author of PSYCHOLOGY: THEMES & VARIATIONS (Cengage, 2017, 10th Edition). Weiten created an educational CD-ROM titled PSYKTREK: A MULTIMEDIA INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY and co-authored a chapter on the Introductory Psychology course for THE OXFORD HANDBOOK OF UNDERGRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION (Weiten & Houska, 2015).

GREAT book for an introductory class!

The material is very well presented and flows from chapter to chapter. Examples from life and previous studies are abundant and help convey the material. Checkpoints along the chapter review the concepts learned in the section. Very good use of images/graphs/data and they are usually properly explained either in the text or the caption. A few great tools for studing includes an end of the chapter multiple choice test and chapter summaries in two forms (web layout and summary of main theme of the chapter graphically).

MOST IMPORTANTLY, SAME CONTENT AS THE 9TH EDITION!! With the DSM-V out now, I believe that what the professor will cover in and intro class would be sufficient. The eating disorders and mood disorders are reclassified but they still exist. Easy stuff that should be in the lecture or at least Google-able.

Pro tip: Don't buy a used book and expect an access code. Just...no.

Textbook rental with slash in cover

The book is well written, clear and effective. The price, for a rented, used textbook, was very reasonable. The book was in excellent condition except for one thing - a 5 inch slash in the cover that looks like it was done with razor blade or Xacto knife. Hopefully, Amazon does not charge us for this.

Solid Content, Ultra-thin Pages w/o Cover

My professor required this specific version for some reason. It arrived wrapped securely in shrink wrap, but there was no true cover (like with other paperbacks), and the loose-leaf pages are super flimsy (like old newsprint). After it arrived, I ordered a sturdy three-ring binder to go with it, which took care of my first concern, that of keeping the pages intact.

After the term was over, it's likely you'll be unable to resell this volume.

This book is excellent for any veterinary student. It is comprehensive and clinically relevant. Good explanations and current diagnostic therapies are given. Feldman and Nelson create a format that is easy to read,current, and so comprehensive that this is a one stop reference for all your endocrine questions.

Detailed Canine/feline reproduction and endocrinology

This is probably the best book in print on canine reproduction. It's also a great reference for endocrinology. It is very technical, this isn't a layman's book but a reference for a working veterinarian. It's also very big, if you have illusions of bedtime reading, better get the Kindle edition!

Saved my dog's life!

My vet didn't know that a diabetic had to be spayed or the glucose would never be controllable. He refused to spay my dog because her glucose was so high his meter couldn't read it. I borrowed the book on interlibrary loan and put sticky notes in all the places where it says the one exception to the no-surgery rule is spaying a female. My girl was spayed a few days later and her glucose levels improved immediately.

Vets don't remember everything they learned in vet school (or never really learned it in the first place). If you have a diabetic pet you have probably already learned enough vocabulary to be able to read the relevant chapters. The Cushings part (much larger) is probably also readable but I didn't look at it.

Gavin Bell designs social web applications for the Nature Publishing Group. He is an interaction designer, community advocate and product manager. Since the early 90s, he has been writing and designing for the web. Large scale web applications covering identity, on-demand media, geolocation and social software have been the main focus of his work at NPG and previously at the BBC. He has worked in academia, advertising, publishing and developed multimedia software. He lives in London with his wife and two sons. The advice you can get from this book is platform agnostic

If you are looking for and how-to guide, with code listings and practical examples you better pick another book. Gavin Bell covers the topic from an architect/designer point of view, he also tends keep in mind the business side of things, something I appreciated. This means the content will be valuable for a long time, since languages, tools and frameworks come and go, while the advice you can get from this book is platform agnostic. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a book with just dry theory, it's based on solid experience both from first-hand experience by the author and the way some major social applications have been build and evolved

An essential guide to fostering online community

Gavin Bell draws on his extensive experience to offer a well structured guide to adding community elements to a website or application. His book will help any professional planning a social strategy, designing a set of social features, determining the types of relationships to foster among users, and even determining how best to manage change in an existing site or online structure.

Bell covers a wide gamut of issues that a site planner will need to consider, from developing the data schema for people, relationships, and objects; to how best to expose APIs to third-party developers; to the process of rolling out a new product or feature. Anyone developing a social website or app should keep this book handy throughout the process.

Bell and I share a publisher and our titles cover some similar issues. When I first picked up Bell's finished book I gritted my teeth with envy. As I quickly devoured the book, though, I was relieved (or, at least I convinced myself) that our books are complementary and are each useful in their own way.

If you're looking for one book to guide you through the entire process, from conception to launch and into the life of a social web application, then this is the book for you.

great ideas but very repetitive
By real world experience
This book is rich in important ideas and is definitely a must read for those interested in the social web. Unfortunately I suspect that it was either written in haste or (perhaps more likely) the author was still working out his ideas as he wrote it, because it is extremely repetitive. This constant reiteration does make the reading experience rather more hard work than it should be because the underlying material is strong and valuable. I am entirely confident that in the next addition he can easily take out 100 pages and the book will be the stronger for it. This is Gavin's first book and I don't think he was well served by his publisher. A competent editor could and should have pointed out the large areas of duplication. Nonetheless, and to repeat myself :), it is a must read.
