This is your true religious roots but because it did not reflect the current religious policies, was left out of your bible.

What an Utter Time Thief!
By Bonam Pak
I bought this book to read a Black centered, Ethiopian perspective on the prophet Enoch. What a complete waste of resources! I thought I could take the warned against repetition, however, I was fed up on page 15 already - with 285 more to follow!

In principle I appreciate any unorthodox/eccentric writing style. However, sick more than 90% of the written words being comprised of quotes of other books etc. is something I do not want to experience Iver again. In fact, the number of pages of his own words would stay clearly in the single digits, if it weren't for the brief conclusion of the book. The author quotes anyone, no matter how often almost literally the very same thing. Quoting, what Enoch is, without the respective reasons. Occasionally, I begged for an explanation: "Enoch is the inventor of urban civilization." How would that be possible, in the supposed 7th generation of humankind? Would that even be a good thing, to invent the big shitty?! Some subchapters are extremely short: "Enoch the Great Authority [headline] In Levitical literature and traditions Enoch is regarded as a great authority." Followed by the source. That was it. Just to give an expression of the exquisiteness of the information. A similar subchapter is headed "Enoch the Creator's Favorite". Four pages later another "Enoch the Favorite of God". Writing exclusively in quotes unsurprisingly lead to various contradictions. Without commenting those. It also lead to omissions.

I hoped to learn something about Enoch. I definitely did not. A third of the book is entirely off the point, i.e. NOT about Enoch. But instead about the Egyptians (!) having been Black and general racism. I do agree (largely) with the author on this (though nothing is new to those who have read other African centered books on Egypt). This doesn't change the fact that there's nothing substantial about Enoch in this book instead, not even in addition.

Quelle surprise, there's racism in the world. It is largely described in such a general way, utterly unrelated to Enoch that I am still wondering, what exactly the concept of the book might have been. Though it was ok to read some examples of famous people saying something racist, just to put them on the history index. Personally I prefer not to repeat that many insults, as that qualifies as further insulting - oneself, involuntarily. As I share the sentiments in general of the author on this, I still add one star to the lowest category possible for this book. I may have added another, but even in this regard the book is flawed. To begin with, there aren't any races.

A major point of discontent I have with this book, is that the author writes things which are true, but discredits them with flawed proofs. He's saying, if one Biblical character is Black skinned, then ALL before and after in the geneology must have been also. Likely, but not necessarily. Because the Sinai is located in Egypt, and because Egypt is located in Africa, the ancient Egyptians must have been Black. Yes, they were Black, but the causal relationship escapes me. Anyway, I may add ancient Blacks once lived in eastern Asia, Scotland, Scandinavia, India, Tasmania, etc. Also the Sumerians were Black, yes. But not because they CAME from Africa, but because the area was well within the ancient Black populated world. The pre-Hebrew people descending from Abraham are described as numbering 70 when migrating into Egypt, but numbering some (3,)600,000 at the Imes of the exodus a relatively short Imes later. The author suggests that they must have mixed with Blacks and therefore HAD BECOME Black. In reality, Abraham had been Black from the beginning, as is contradictingly mentioned elsewhere. Besides, it is an urban legend that he came from Ur. (Read The Africans Who Wrote the Bible.) The names and artificial borders of continents say nothing about the skin color of the respective inhabitants at different Imes. Moses (who is not seen as Akenten/Akhenaton in this book) was black skinned, yes. But this is not provable with the magic trick in the Bible, displaying a white hand for a moment as a supposed contrast to his general phenotype color. For one thing, he was explicitly NOT the Israelites' "first great miracle worker". Simply for the reason that he taught AGAINST magic. Later scribes of the Bible misunderstood the earlier texts and misinterpreted and mistranslated various text passages into a lot of magic tricks never done. In addition, the white hand is not referring to any phenotype whiteness, but sickness whiteness, as is still overstandable from the quote provided. It is referring to leprosy. Someone "White" could have done the same "white hand magic", as "Whites" are in reality pink or beige. More about Moses read in Moses and Akhenaten: The Secret History of Egypt at the Time of the Exodus. Enoch might have been an Ethiopian (as in today's country). He was Black for sure. However not, because the Ethiopian Church still includes it in its canon. The other early churches did that as well. Ethiopia became isolated from the rest of Christianity and didn't follow subsequent doctrine changes. There are other Ethiopian apocryphs, not about Ethiopians and other Bible texts in European Bibles not referring to Europeans. The book follows the belief that every people (= phenotype) has to venerate Mary and Jesus/I-Yasus in the skin color of their own. I concur that fakings, done in order to downpress, should not be followed. However, the book's suggestion is racist in the manner that non-Black (APPEARING) people supposedly aren't INHERENTLY able to identify with a Black Jesus and that indeed different skin colors equal different peoples/races. Last not least Adam was most likely Black, yes. (That I would have to say that as a RastafarI...) No matter, how much the concept of Adam is White. Yet at the Imes of Adam, as described by the Bible and this book, humans already featured all the other phenotypes. Simply, because Adam wasn't really the first human, as can be seen in his story of further procreation. He was the first patriarch under a certain concept of humanity. So the "proof" is flawed that as the first human he must have been black skinned, even though he was. Ancient Egypt is still described as too young. Read When We Ruled: The Ancient and Medieval History of Black Civilisations.

This book doesn't only quote The Isis Papers: The Keys to the Colors, but actually recommends it, as the author Dr. Cress Welsing supposedly does a "brilliant analysis" of racism. In reality, that book is hiding grave racism (against Blacks) behind a thin veil of reversed racism. Curiously, a few pages later, historic The Willie Lynch Letter and the Making of a Slave is quoted extensively. Perfectly describing what The Isis Papers has continued EXACTLY in a modern version. In that sense, Willie Lynch was perfectly right that with his methods Blacks in America can be controlled for at least 300 years - obviously even when they are freed and perfectly aware of them.

As for the Enoch part of this book: The author takes everything literally - and by that misses the point. The mysticism of it. For example that Enoch ascended into Heaven with his body. This isn't even literally said in the story. (In fact, there are even contradictory quotes that his body was transformed into "flames".) It is just said that he didn't die. That is a tremendous difference. Other literal interpretations include people living anywhere from 365 years to capping a millennium and that God looks like a (hu)man.

There are some hostile references towards sexuality and the Greek are getting criticized for not inventing any doctrines which couldn't get enforced accordingly. For once, the Greeks have done something right, and then that's bad...

As for the sloppy presentation of the book: The contents table is completely wrong, suggesting some 50 more pages not existing due to an altered lay-out, there are two chapter X, and many other flaws of this sort, suggesting a lacking proof-reader.

The actual text of Enoch is not included. Please read the Ethiopian version: The Lost Book of Enoch: Comprehensive Transliteration of the Forgotten Book of the Bible.

Not what I expected!
By Rosanna Tarsiero
This book will be helpful to you IF your target is band 5. For anything above it, this book won't add much that you didn't know before reading it. To give you an idea, this is for people having troubles with prepositions, singular/plural, modal verbs, auxiliary verbs, passive verbs, apostrophes.

However, since chances are you will need an IELTS score higher than 5, this book will rarely be useful for IELTS. Nevertheless, it can be useful if you want to improve your English beyond the very basics.

Bestselling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up twenty-seven bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word. Via chapters such as "Your Brain Is Your Bitch," "Fear Is for Suckers" and "My Subconscious Made Me Do It," Sincero takes you on a wild joy ride to your own transformation, helping you create the money, relationships, career, and general all-around awesomeness you so desire. And should you be one of those people who dreads getting busted with a self-help book in your hands, fear not. By the end of You Are a Badass, you will understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can't change, how to change what you don't love, and how to start living the kind of life you used to be jealous of.

Review
"Sincero brings a fun, feminine verve to now well-tread self-help tropes. . . . The tone is far more feisty than academic, and there's humor on every page, all of which is exactly what her intended audience most needs." ---Publishers Weekly

Good writing but limited perspective
By Mac
Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

NOT for people with Depression. Be warned. Very triggering.
By Lauren Cutrone
Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.
Until Chapter 17.
About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.
People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed.
...
And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds.
My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them.
And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out.
Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.
Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.
Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

If Think and Grow Rich is chocolate ice cream, then this book is vanilla-almond with a sprinkle of M&Ms and chocolate sauce!
By Peter Cross
There are many so called self-help books out there. Some good, some really bad. Some are rehashed stuff. I know this as I must have read almost all the famous ones and not so famous ones. I probably read yearly around 20-25 books in this category. Jen did a wonderful work here. She touches topics that where handled by Napoleon Hill, Anthony Robbins, Eckhart Tolle, Pam Grout and Rhonda Byrne and yet this is a new book. She managed to give a very unique view to already known topics and I personally think she did a great job! You are a badass is refreshingly irreverent and is ideal for you if you hate the "new-age-emotional-mumbo-jumbo" as Jen appears to be a down to earth girl with a unique set of thinking and writing abilities.

I recommend this to anyone that wants to have a fresh look at things like the law of attraction, consciousness, fighting depression and low self esteem and needs a little boost in motivation, but does not like the "spirituality" and new-age kinda like books that are en vogue nowadays. Think about self-help books as ice cream and you will find that Jen Sincero just created a new flavor, that is crazy but has you come back for more. I am curious about her next books. I wish her the badass success that she talks about so vividly.

A wide variety of optical instruments exists in which the human eye forms an integral part of the system. This book provides a detailed description of the visual ergonomics of such instruments. The book begins with a section on image formation and basic optical components. The authors then discuss various optical instruments that can be adequately described using geometrical optics, and follow this with a section on diffraction and interference, and the instruments based on these effects. There are separate sections devoted to ophthalmic instruments and aberration theory, with a final section covering visual ergonomics in depth. Containing many problems and solutions, this book will be of great use to undergraduate and graduate students of optometry, optical design, optical engineering, and visual science, and to professionals working in these and related fields.

Landmark text on the topic
By Dr Andrew Carkeet
I am a researcher in the field of visual optics. I first obtained a copy of this book nearly 5 years ago, when I was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. I thought the book was excellent then and the subsequent passage of time has reinforced my view.
I refer to my copy constantly. When I am dealing with a new and complicated topic as part of my work my first instinct is to check if Smith and Atchison have anything to say on the topic, and I'm usually rewarded. They nearly always provide good introductory material and analytical tools. The book contains very basic level material which is suitable for undergraduates in the area of clinical optics and develops these concepts to postgrad and research levels.
The section on aberrations is extremely useful, although it does not use the Zernike polynomials that have become popular in the last few years, it has still allowed me to do useful analysis of my data. I have also found the sections on optical quality calculations extremely useful, and the appendices on schematic eyes are the most complete I've come across in the literature.
I look forward to many subsequent editions of this text. An excellent book for researchers and students.

Good for Ophthalmic Optics
By Mark King
This book has good content, particularly for ophthalmic optics. The description of optical aberrations is useful. However, the treatment of paraxial optics is confusing. The authors should avoid the use of symbols that are not writeable (e.g. Cyrillic), and obscure Greek letters. All in all, a useful book.

From Publishers Weekly
Kaufman, a former middle manager at Proctor & Gamble and founder of personalmba.com, argues that those interested in business would be better served by skipping the M.B.A. and focusing on the critically important concepts that really make or break a business. According to the author, much of what is taught in business schools is outdated; you're better off saving the expense and finding other ways to learn about these core principles--which Kaufman synthesizes--in such areas as value creation, marketing, sales, and finance. He also explores the psychological side of business and examines how consumers take in information, make decisions, and decide what to do or not to do. Acknowledging the panoramic overview his approach necessitates, he includes a fairly lengthy list of sources to seek out if more information is needed. While Kaufman's rallying call will not eradicate the need or desire for M.B.A. degrees, he does provide a surprisingly solid alternative full of information that even those already in the workplace will respond to. Master of Business Awareness
By Erik Gfesser
Of the many reviews I have written here, writing a review for this text was among the most difficult because "The Personal MBA" has a large target market consisting of a wide variety of potential readers, and the vast majority of reviews here are very positive. Because of this situation, I fall back on my review philosophy, which is to write as objectively as possible, taking into account the claims of the author in terms of their goals, as well as comparing to other materials in the marketplace. What is not necessarily fair is to write solely based on my knowledge or experience, which often times does not match the backgrounds of the target audience.

Admittedly, this text is very well written. The writing style and organization of Kaufman contributes greatly to readability, and I enjoyed this aspect of this book. Many business works have a lot of fluff, and in general most of this text provides substance that will be appreciated by many readers. In addition, the history behind this book is interesting in that it came about as a natural step after the author created a heavily visited blog listing books and resources he had found valuable in his studies, so readers can be assured that this text was not written from an ivory tower perspective but resulted directly from reader interest.

The author writes at length in his first chapter as to why this book should be read. It is not easy summarizing this chapter in a few short sentences, but Kaufman mentions that what he provides here is "a set of foundational business concepts that you can use to get things done. Reading this book will give you a firm foundation of business knowledge you can use to make things happen. Once you master the fundamentals, you can accomplish even the most challenging business goals with surprising ease." Later, the author calls this text "a self-directed crash course in business", and provides an extensive discourse as to why the traditional MBA does not provide significant value.

Neither the author nor myself has an MBA, although we have both gone to business school (and I also have a graduate degree). While I cannot speak for the author, in my opinion there is substantial material in this text to provide to the business neophyte. However, I was unfortunately not overly impressed with the material Kaufman provides after chapter 6, which is midway through the book. The author makes up on this aspect to some extent by providing an appendix entitled "How to Continue Your Business Studies" that lists dozens of texts in a variety of business topics, although this list serves as a reminder that, as communicated in the introduction, what the author provides here is an introductory text.

If you do not have time to read this whole text, I recommend reading chapter 2, entitled "Value Creation" on creating value for customers. The summary that the author provides on the "Twelve Standard Forms of Value" (product, service, shared resource, subscription, resale, lease, agency, audience aggregation, loan, option, insurance, capital), for example, is very well done. The "Ten Ways to Evaluate a Market" is also especially well done. The author obviously summarizes and synthesizes material from disparate sources very well, but the reader needs to be aware that much of the content provided is just that, a CliffsNotes-styled survey of what the author has determined is fundamental to studying business.

From the perspective of a consultant, be aware however that this material is sometimes overly summarized and synthesized. For example, in his 3-chapter presentation on understanding systems, analyzing systems, and improving systems, many important topics are glossed over, and unless the reader understands the substance that is waiting for them within the reading lists the author provides, they may minimize the importance or complexity of the topics. For example, the definition that the author provides for "Return on Investment (ROI)" is limited to "simply dividing the amount of money you collect by the amount of money you spent, then subtracting by 1.00."

However, there would be no need for texts such as "The Consultant's Scorecard: Tracking Results and Bottom-Line Impact of Consulting Projects", by Jack Phillips (see my review), where several ROI calculations are detailed at length, if this calculation were so simple. Fortunately, Kaufman points the reader in the right direction, and presents in an entertaining manner, and so this book is recommended to anyone new to business topics, especially aspiring entrepreneurs. One of the best features of this text are the many quotes from other sources that introduce each of the subtopics in the 12 chapters provided here, and for this reason alone this book is worth a read.

Brilliant, but reads like a Textbook. What did you expect?
By Michael A. Robson
"You dropped 150 grand on an education you could have gotten for $1.50 in late charges at the public library." Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting

In The Personal MBA Josh Kaufman makes a very compelling case (as does Will Hunting) that for people considering an MBA, the economics aren't that great. For many graduate students (not just Business majors), it feels like a Casino: everyone takes the tests, and gets primed, then takes out a huge loan from the bank (often a six-figure amount) hoping that when they come out the other side, there will be an awesome, high-paying job waiting for them. It's a financial transaction, not really an educational one. In fact, much of the education gleaned from an Master in Business Administration is theoretical and marginally updated from the projects and Case Studies done in Bachelor of Business and Economics programs; after all, how can you possibly sit in a classroom and `learn' how to be a Manager, or an Executive? Of course you can't. But the schools are more than willing to let you try, as long as the cheques clear.

Provided those cheques do clear (in many states in the US, the juice, as they say, is running the day you take your first class, not after you graduate), students can expect a marginally better income (in this economy? yuck) awaiting them on the other side; it turns out they're getting a crash course in finance after all! Ouch.

In the beginning of The Personal MBA, Kaufman reveals something striking: research shows there is little evidence that getting an MBA has any correlation with long term success in Business. Top tier Business programs make sure that they only accept brilliant students, which is why many go on to greatness. Business schools make it their business to take credit for other people's work-namely, your undergraduate degree, and your having studied for the GMAT. In a perfect world, you'd be better off, studying for the GMAT, applying to Harvard Business, getting accepted, and then refusing to attend (and pay the exorbitant tuition, and 2 years of your life), then bragging on your CV that you were accepted at Harvard, and applying for a plum job with a Fortune 500 company, ready to put you through the Management training program.

Why doesn't anybody do that? Because the MBA itself acts as a signal to help simplify the recruiter's job: he or she doesn't want to read 5,000 CVs. Reading 50 is a lot faster. It's that simple. Which 50 get the job doesn't really matter. When the eventual 20-something is hired, he or she will proceed to the actual training program, and begin to be molded into the perfect Hewlett Packard / Cisco/ Apple/ GE/ Nike/Starbucks Manager. That's right: real companies don't hire college grads and just plop them in a management or executive role. They have training programs. They have quarterly reviews. They promote you based on progress, not based on your GPA.

Where else did you think you would learn how to be a Manager?

Unfortunately there's no way around it. Since MBA students are required to pass the GMAT first, a fundamental understanding of business and finance is required before you set foot on a real campus. If the Personal MBA (book, and accompanying website) is going to attempt to replace an actual MBA, they must put the reader through the paces of very fundamental Business Concepts.

Business and Finance majors (like myself) will find much of this familiar, but that shouldn't take away from Kaufman's impressive achievement here. He's taken 2 years of Education and compressed it into a fantastic 400 page reference material. Kaufman will hold up the six-figure MBA and declare that by buying this book you're effectively saving $99,982, but of course, you're not getting a piece of paper either.

So for anyone who didn't graduate in Economics of Business, this book is a great summary of the definitions and concepts that took us about 4 years to get through. And it's pretty much the same material (minus countless case studies and Powerpoint presentations) you'd get from top-tier business programs.

So what do I suggest for young career-minded readers?

The point of an MBA, traditionally, was not for a 19 or 20 year old to `train' to be a manager (whatever that means) but for a middle-manager to train to be a leader in his current company. An ideal situation would be to get a job (any job) with a great company and work your way up, and eventually have your boss pay for your education. The company will consider the investment in human capital worth it if they see potential in you, and will also have you promise to stay with the company for at least a few years upon graduation, so they can benefit from their investment.

Education is great. If I didn't believe that, I sure wouldn't have started a blog about it. But so is avoiding foolish six-figure debt. Consult your boss, and consult this book before proceeding.

(PS. Yes, I've graduated from a post-secondary International Business program. That one came with a five-figure student loan, not six.)

Absolutely worth my time and money
By trombson
Hands down the best non-fiction book I've read in a long time (I finish about one every two weeks). Concise, actionable and most of the time very easy to read. Some parts are more self-help-ish, but I didn't mind because even those concepts were better summarized than in any other book. Quite happy with the ROI.
